Ren

"Mom, do I really have to do this?" Various buildings and restaurants zoomed past the window on our way to the store that just opened a few minutes away from our house.

Apparently my mom had already set everything up for me, all I needed to do was show up and answer a few questions.

"Yes Ren, jeez can you just listen to me for once? I'm telling you this is a good life experience. Getting your first job is always a step in the right direction." I was more upset about the fact that she didn't even tell me about this until earlier today.

The rest of the ride was in silence until we pulled up in front of a building that read 'Shoe Paradise!' in bold, bright letters with a grand opening banner right under it.

"Couldn't they have picked a better name?"

My mom chuckled and unlocked the doors of the car, "You'll be fine honey. Don't fuck this up! Oh and ask for the owner!"

I stepped out the car and waved to her as she drove away. With a long sigh, I turned around and sluggishly made my way into the store.

Stepping inside the store was almost like stepping inside a hurricane. People were rushing around, pushing and brushing past anyone who crossed their path. There was a huge crowd of people gathered around the clearance rack and even more at the check-out lines.

Due to the stores big capacity, a shiver of uncertainty and nervousness went down my spine. I looked for a manager, or even a worker to try and show me where the owner was. Quickly scanning the area I spotted someone wearing a light red shirt with a big 'Shoe Paradise!' logo on the front.

"Bingo." I muttered to myself and started to advance towards the tall man stocking shelves. The overwhelming smell of leather and sweat hit my nostrils the further I got into the store.

"Um, excuse me sir, can you tell me where the owner is?" He turned to me with a big smile on his face. This man had to be in his late 30's due to the few grey hairs on his head.

"You're speaking to him." He said in a cheery voice.

Flashing my eyes over the name tag clipped on his shirt I started to explain to him, "Uh my mom called in earlier about the job openings here?" I said not really knowing how else to say it.

"Oh yes I remember! Follow me." Spencer picked up the box he was stocking shelves with and motioned me to follow him. We weaved in and out of aisles until we got to the back where he opened up one of the doors. Inside there was a desk and several boxes stacked up high all around the room.

"Now I know it's a little...crowded in here but please, have a seat." He gestured towards the chair on the other side of the desk before taking a seat.

"Now your mom was telling me you needed a job and that you were interested in working part-time, is that correct?"

"Yes sir."

He waved his hand in dismissal, "No need for formalities, please, call me Spencer. It makes me feel old when people call me sir."

I smiled, "Alright Spencer."

"Anyways as you can see from the way the store is running right now we need more staff. A group of teenagers applied and I had no choice but to hire them. They're working part-time, just as you will." Spencer stopped abruptly before taking out a paper, it looked more like a check-in log to me.

"What is your name?" He asked while pulling a pen out from one of the desk drawers.

"Uh, Ren Fuller." For the next 30 minutes or so, Spencer proceeded to ask me questions like 'How old are you?' and 'Have you had any experience in retail before?'
