Samuel always appeared to be angelic, never even hurting a fly. He was always most distressed when he accidentally harmed even the most insignificant of God's creatures. If Samuel found a slug in his lettuce, the greatest care would be taken returning it to the garden. Arnold was even careful to never lash out at any insect that stung him. He coped well in his life of devotion until he began to wonder if the lettuce he ate also had God given feelings. Eventually, eating phobias would kill him. Samuel's left all his money for the gilding of a statue of Saint Mary. Some years earlier he watched a little girl fall victim to wild bees. He didn't intervene, despite near immunity to their poison, through fear for his soul. He would never risk injuring a bee.

Arnold was a rough diamond from the start. He enjoyed all life had to offer, never apparently conscious of the consequences of his actions. He loved hunting and fishing and willingly killed for his country. He died of anaphylaxic shock when he rushed in to save the terrified girl. In his will he left all he had to pay for a community party.
