Soul's POV
He gripped Maka's face with his calloused hands and smiled.

She gasped and my eyes grew wide from inside of my scythe form.

"Soul resonance. Nightmarish slumber." He chanted.

Maka let out a pained screech as she stumbled backwards. Bolts of black shadows latched onto her face and sunk into her skin. Something wasn't right. I could feel our wavelengths sputtering.

"Maka!" I yelled desperately and transformed into my human form.

I extended my arms and caught her before she could fall.

The kishin laughed evilly and disappeared in a burst of darkness.

"Soul." She whispered and looked up at me.

I could feel tears surfacing in my eyes. Not cool. The light leaving her eyes were enough to push my emotions to the limits.

"Come on Maka. You're stronger than this. It's just a scratch. Besides if you go, then you'll leave me and that's not cool. That's not cool at all!"

She let out a weak laugh and smiled slightly. It looked as if she was trying to memorize the sight of me. But that could only mean that she really thought that she was dying.

"Maka stop!" I exclaimed shakily.

Maka extended her hand, but from her fading strength her outstretched palm wavered and nearly fell.

I guided it to my face where she cupped it and stared into my crimson eyes as I stared into her fading green ones.

She slowly let her lids flutter shut and her skin tone lightened three shades.

My heart began to beat rapidly and I hastily pulled her chest to my ear. I need to find a pulse. I listened hard and could barely hear the slight rhythmic thumping of her heart.

I set her down gently before allowing my anguish to explode, "MAKA!!THE WEAPON IS SUPPOSED TO PROTECT THE MEISTER NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!!"

I screamed to no one in particular. Letting my emotions drain out of me.

After my little tantrum, I scooped Maka's lifeless body up into my arms bridal style. I trudged back to my motorcycle and drove to Stein's house.

I reached the front door with Maka sleeping soundly.

Stein flew out of the house on his spinny chair like an idiot and fell down flat on his face.

He readjusted his screw that stuck out of his head and waited until it clicked just right.

He closed his eyes,"So Soul, what can I do for you?"

When he opened his eyes they slightly went wide as he saw my grim expression and Maka's limp body.

"Come inside." He instructed.

I followed without question and shut the door behind me.

He was about to take her from my arms but I shot him a death glare and he took a long drag on his cigarette. Stein led me to a bed and I gently placed her onto the stark white sheets.

He hooked up several tubes and a heart monitor. It began to beep monotonously.

I pulled up a chair next to her and grabbed her hand. It felt cold so I sandwiched it in between mine.

"Come on Maka. Please.."

This all happened 2 years ago.

2 years ago, I lost my partner.

In life, on missions, and in love.

Great, when did I get so cheesy?

I visited her everyday. Her hair was down to her waist and she was always my sleeping beauty. What I wouldn't give for this to all be a fairy tale where I could just plant a kiss on her lips and then she would wake up and I could finally see those emerald eyes and tell her how I feel.

She wasn't the only one who had changed. My hair was a bit longer, but still somehow manageable. I had gotten taller and my usual yellow jacket collected dust in my closet. I now wore a black leather jacket and black headband. I wonder what Maka would say if she saw me?

"Maka. It's been 2 years now. Don't you think it's time to wake up?" I asked, knowing I wouldn't get a response.

"I probably wouldn't be able to tell you this if you were awake, but I love you. I have for a while now and I know you probably don't feel the same way and-" I was cut off by the most horrifying sound.

Maka's heart monitor sputtered.

I felt my stomach drop and a cold sweat break out on my forehead.

Wait. If her heart raced because of what I just said, then that means that she can probably hear me.

"Maka. Maka! If you can hear me Maka, please wake up. The DWMA isn't the same without you. People need you, I need you. Come back please." I pleaded. I was desperate at this point.

I couldn't come back to seeing my meister always asleep and showing no signs of waking up. The guilt that weighs on my shoulders is almost unbearable.

I leaned on the doorway for support and let my white hair shadow my eyes.

I placed one foot out of the room and prepared to head back to our empty apartment.

"S-Soul?" A small stuttering voice asked from behind me.

I froze and turned slowly to see Maka leaning on her IV rod for support. Her skinny, wobbly knees trembled and her long golden hair hung over her shoulders.

She looked at me with tears in her emerald eyes. I guess I had tears in mine too.

I ran to her and tackled her with an embrace, while still being mindful of how fragile she was. We sunk down to the floor, not wanting to let the other go. I kissed her forehead, then one turned to thousands of little ones that started on her head and gravitated to her cheeks and finally I saved the last one for her lips.

I closed the gap and poured all of my passion into this kiss.

I pulled away and Maka sighed with delight. I gave her my crooked smile and held in my laughter as her heart monitor went crazy.

She woke up.

Guess fairy tales aren't so far-fetched as they seem.
