~~~~~Chapter 9~~~~~
When I wake up, everyone else is already hustling through the halls. I have no idea what time it is, but I know we're probably leaving for Nevada soon. So I get up, take the set of clothes that were left for me, and find my way to the bathroom.
After I've freshened up some and changed into new clothes, I make my way to our meeting place. Brittany.
Dixon is now our official pilot, so he'll be taking us to Nevada to get us a new team member.
I have no clue what will be waiting for us there. Heck, I don't even know how to shoot straight, but they give me a gun anyway. And I pray I won't have to use it, but if I do have to, I will.
"Alrighty now," Dixon says putting his arms up. "The only way Brittany will let any of you ride, is if you dance for her." He grins at us expectantly. So we dance. Ian does the sprinkler, Daltin does some weird arm wave thing. Again, I'm awkward. And it physically hurts me sometimes.
So then we all climb inside the plane-uh, excuse me, Brittany- and we take off to Nevada.
After hours of listening to Alex, Daltin, Dixon, and even Ian make stupid jokes about stopping by Los Vegas, I'm ready to get get another chick on this team.
We land and hike to an abandoned warehouse, that doesn't look so abandoned anymore. There are Ants everywhere. They are loading crates and boxes into trucks parked in the old, cracked parking lot. But I don't know why they are packing up. Are they leaving?
My thoughts are interrupted by Ian urging me forward. I realize Daltin, and Alex are skirting the perimeter trying to get in, so I follow after them. Ian brings up the back, as we enter through a side door that's unlocked thanks to Alex's lock picking skills.
Inside it's dark, there are giant card board boxes everywhere. Some stacked all the way up to the cat walks one story up. I look up and around scanning for Ants, Ian does the same. No one is around, which is good I guess, but something feels off. Where did they all go?
"Split up," says Daltin. "Use the ear pieces to communicate. If anything goes south, meet back at the plane."
"Brittany," Alex corrects. We all roll our eyes, but we split. Alex goes right, Ian goes left, Daltin goes straight, and I climb up to the cat walks and upper hall.
It's so quite, I can hear my heart beating. I try to keep my foot steps silent as I creep along.
Slowly, I start to peek around a corner down a dark hallway, but I recoil when I hear beeping. I press myself against the wall and grip the gun at my thigh.
At first, I think the beeping might be a bomb, but it sounds more like a computer moniter. I hear rustling and I know some one is in there.
The rustling stops, but I hear foot steps coming my way. I pull my gun and aim it at the persons head.
"Don't move," I say in the most forceful voice I can.
She turns to face me with a blank look. She has cocoa colored skin and hair. Her hair is tied back in a messy bun with curls sticking out at different angles.
"Did you bring the package?" she asks raising her eyebrows. Now I'm just extremely confused. What package? I glance around.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Good. If you were an Ant, you would have said, 'Yes, just as you asked.' I know you're not an Ant," she says, loosing some tention in her shoulders. "Let's go then. I'm Kenna, by the way. Thanks for coming." She talks fast, the way reporters do. I feel slightly relieved, but I keep my gun out just in case. She retrieves a dirty duffle bag, slings it over her shoulder, and looks at me expectantly.
"No problem. Follow me," I say turning to go down to the main level to leave. She follows me down a ladder and we head for the same door we enter through. I touch my pointer finger to my right ear and say through my ear piece, "I found her. Meet you at the door."
I hear Kenna say something and place a hand on my shoulder just as someone barrels through a door to my right and knocks me to the ground. I'm about to fuss at Alex, or Daltin for falling on top of me, but I see that it's a girl. She has white spiky hair and a small frame.
"What the-" I pull myself up and narrow my eyes at her. But she looks scarred. She's panting like she has been running.
"Can you help me?" she asks, panting. "Can you help get me outta' here?"
"Follow us," I say continuing to the exit.
Suddenly, we hear a loud pop. Sparks fly and a large stack of boxes tumble down near the exit.
"What now!?" I mutter.
I keep my gun ready, as we jog to the exit.
Ian, and Daltin are waiting for us at the door. A few seconds after us, Alex walks up from the left. He chuckles and says "Sorry. That was my bad."
"What did you do?" I ask in an annoyed tone.
"I don't know," he says, shrugging. "But it looked cool." I roll my eyes. Ian chuckles with Alex.
"That's great and all, but we got to go," says Daltin holding the door open. "Wait," says Ian. "Two?"
"Yeah. I ran into her after finding Kenna here." I say nodding toward the smaller girl. She still looks pretty shaken up.
"Like literally, ran into her," adds Kenna.
"Yay, two new team members then," says Daltin impatiently. "Let's go!"
When we all get back to the plane Dixon starts it up, and we go back south, to Arizona.
