Arthur CyrusThe Iron-Hearted Veteran

Arthur Cyrus had never been a man who expected life to be kind.

He had simply learned to endure it.

Born into a relatively ordinary family, Arthur grew up during an era in which the world was divided by ideology, military alliances, and the constant threat of nuclear war. From an early age, he developed an interest in military history, strategy, technology, and leadership.

Unlike many men his age, Arthur possessed a mind that adapted quickly to changing circumstances.

That trait would remain with him for the rest of his life.

The Soldier

Arthur entered military service as a young man and eventually built a distinguished career within the armed forces.

His active service encompassed two defining periods of modern history.

The first was the Cold War.

The second was the Vietnam War.

Arthur experienced the realities of military service firsthand: the discipline, bureaucracy, uncertainty, logistical challenges, psychological pressure, and brutal consequences of poor decisions.

He learned that wars were rarely won simply because one side had better soldiers.

They were won through preparation.

Information.

Logistics.

Morale.

Industrial capacity.

Intelligence.

Leadership.

And sometimes, simply knowing when not to fight.

Arthur served for decades.

Over the course of his career, he rose through the ranks and eventually achieved a high-ranking military position before retiring at the age of sixty-six.

By then, he had accumulated an enormous amount of practical knowledge.

He understood chain of command.

He understood how soldiers thought.

He understood supply lines.

He understood fortifications.

He understood the importance of intelligence.

Most importantly, he understood that the strongest army was useless if its commander could not feed it, equip it, and maintain its morale.

Arthur had also learned another lesson during his years of service:

Power attracts people.

Some seek it because they want to protect others.

Others seek it because they want to control them.

A wise leader had to know the difference.

The Retired General

Retirement did not turn Arthur into a recluse immediately.

Instead, he found himself fascinated by a rapidly changing civilian world.

Computers.

The internet.

Smartphones.

Artificial intelligence.

Advanced manufacturing.

Digital infrastructure.

New technology appeared constantly, but Arthur never developed the common fear that many people associated with rapid technological change.
