The sun was still high when Clara found the iron-bound well in the center of her new orchard. The real estate listing had called the property "historic and untouched," but as she leaned over the stone lip, the darkness inside felt deliberate, like ink held in a cup. The air rising from the stone was freezing, carrying the sharp scent of wet copper. Clara dropped a pebble into the mouth of the well;

she stood perfectly still, but she never heard it hit the bottom.That night, the plumbing in her upstairs bathroom began to hum a low, vibrating note that rattled the floorboards. By Tuesday, the water from her kitchen tap tasted faintly of old soil and rust, staining the white porcelain sink with dark, reddish-brown rings.Clara spent the next week clearing the overgrown brambles around the perimeter of the stone structure. Every evening at exactly 3:14 AM, she woke to the sound of something heavy dragging itself across the gravel driveway beneath her bedroom window.

When she checked the yard, the property was always completely empty under the moonlight. However, each morning she found the tall grass around the well completely flattened, as if a massive, wet weight had been rested there hours before. Driven by a restless obsession and a growing lack of sleep, she bought a high-powered industrial winch and a waterproof inspection camera system. She needed to see what was down there to put her mind at ease.She rigged the camera to the winch and lowered it into the dark opening. The monitor on her kitchen table flickered to life, showing the wet stone walls sliding past, slick with a thick, black moss. At fifty feet down, the ancient stone gave way to smooth, hand-carved wooden beams.

At one hundred feet, the camera passed hundreds of rusted iron hooks driven deep into the timber. Finally, at two hundred feet down, the walls vanished entirely, opening into a massive, pitch-black subterranean cavern.The camera swung wildly in the vast emptiness as Clara fed out more cable. Finally, the winch went slack.
The feed stabilized, revealing a floor composed entirely of pale, calcified bones. In the center of the frame sat an old, wooden rocking chair. Sitting in it was a stationary figure wrapped tightly in a moldering burial shroud.Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat. She reached for the winch control to pull the camera back up, but before her fingers could touch the button, the figure in the rocking chair slowly tilted its head back toward the lens.

The shroud fell away, revealing a face she saw in the mirror every single morning. It was her own corpse-rotted, hollow-eyed, and grinning. On the monitor, the dead version of Clara raised a pale, skeletal hand and pointed directly up at the camera lens.At that exact second, Clara heard the heavy, wet thud of boots walking out of her own dark hallway, stopping right behind her kitchen chair.

Before she could scream, a freezing hand smelling of wet copper and old soil pressed firmly onto her shoulder.The grip tightened with a strength that didn't belong to a human living being, pinning Clara to the chair. She tried to cry out, but the air was entirely forced from her lungs as the temperature in the kitchen plummeted, turning her breath into white plumes of vapor.
The grip on her shoulder shifted, sliding up to her neck, pulling her chin backward until she was forced to look straight up into the ceiling.There were no boots. There was no intruder from the outside world. Standing directly over her was a towering, featureless silhouette made entirely of the same black, ink-like water from the well. The entity didn't have eyes, yet Clara could feel its absolute, suffocating malice. It leaned down close, and as its watery face parted into a jagged mimicry of a mouth, it exhaled a wave of freezing, stagnant air directly into her face.

With a sudden, violent wrench, the entity pulled her backward. The physical kitchen seemed to dissolve into a vortex of freezing dark liquid. Clara felt herself being dragged through the floorboards, down through the foundation of the house, and directly into the cold earth. She didn't drown; the water filled her throat and lungs, but it kept her conscious, binding her physical body to the very substance of the well.The descent was instantaneous and absolute. When the roaring in her ears finally stopped, Clara opened her eyes.
The kitchen, her house, and the upper world were completely gone. She was sitting upright, paralyzed, in the ancient wooden rocking chair at the bottom of the cavern. Around her lay the mountain of calcified bones, glowing faintly in the dark.Above her, the small green light of the inspection camera buzzed quietly on its cable. Clara tried to move her hand, but her flesh had already begun to grey and wither, hardening into the exact moldering shroud she had seen on the screen moments before.

Her consciousness remained perfectly clear, trapped inside a dead vessel, fully aware that she was now just another permanent fixture of the subterranean tomb.On the kitchen table upstairs, the monitor continued to hum in the empty house. The camera feed showed the rotted corpse in the rocking chair, pointing silently upward into the dark, waiting for the next owner of the orchard to lower the cable.
