Somewhere in the future.
Pained cries ring out as flames engulf the city. Metallic creatures run rampant, killing anything in their sight. This is the mass extinction of the Mutant race...
"We need to move!" Plasma blaster fire zooms by an older man's head as he leads a group of soldiers through a sewage system. Firing some shots back, he cracked his knuckles and punched the wall. The sewer chunks and bits and pieces started to fall from the ceiling. One more punch, and the ceiling collapsed. Flaming debris fell from above, blocking the path.
"That should hold them for a bit." He sighed and ran after the group. Catching up to the group, they met a dead end enforced by a giant seal. The man walked up to it, and with a few rhythmic knocks, a small slit opened. "Name and state your business."
"Cable, and I found a few stragglers." The other side went silent, and the slit closed. A few clicks and shifts later, the huge door slowly swung open.
"Welcome back, sir." A soldier who looked like he'd been through hell and back twice saluted. "Come on, Ben, I've told you, this isn't the military; you don't have to do that."
"Sorry, sir." Cable led the group in. They were approached and brought to a quarantine room.
The Resistance Base
"Cable, you're back," a young woman approached him. "How did it go out there?"
"It's getting worse by the day. Genosha is almost completely dust. We're running out of time. Has he made any progress on the machine?"
"You're in luck; he just finished it." They walked through this makeshift base. There didn't seem to be more than 50 people there. All pretty much skin and bone. "We managed to sneak back through the mansion and grab some parts of the danger room, or what was left of it."
They approached a sealed door, which Cable punched a code into. The door opened, and on the inside was a hurricane of papers and computers running what seemed like endless lines of code. The most noticeable part was the machine in the center with the word HOPE carved into it.
"Amaris, you in here?" A pile of papers shifted, and out rose a middle-aged black man. He was skin and bone and missing an arm. "Ah, Kitty, Cable."
"Hey, old man," Cable went up to Amaris and helped him up. "Cable, it's ready. I finally finished it."
Cable led him to a chair. "I... Have some bad news."
"What is it?" Lanar looked down. "The fuel, I could only make enough for one trip. Which means whoever we send will be stuck there."
The room grew silent. "How many does it seat?" Kitty asked?
"One."
"Simple, Kitty will go."
"Like hell, you'll get way more done there than I will. Plus, Scott and Madalen would love to see you."
"I'm not going there on vacation, Kitty."
"Exactly, we're there to kill a kid."
"That kid is exactly how we ended up in this mess!"
"Don't start, you two." Amaris raised his hand to silence both of them. "I didn't build this for you to go and kill the one responsible for this. That would be a waste, and I'd just be sending you to your death."
"What? Then what the hell was the point?!?" Kitty yelled.
m"Sir, we've lost so much trying to build this. So Many people have laid down their lives to make sure we completed this. If we're not going back to prevent this, then why are we going back at all?"
