It's always been the way. Always kill the strange; crush the magic before they grow. Don't let them use their magic to hurt the kingdom. The IceWings haven't learned their lesson, still breeding animus magic into their bloodlines. They will learn one day, Queen Tangerine was convinced. The other tribes do not know that animus magic poses a danger and should destroy it at all costs. Even though the Icewings adhere to a rule about magic use, restricting it to one occasion, their practice continues. The Skywing way has promised safety and a safe kingdom. Her thoughts were interrupted as she heard claws against stone. Quail, who is her female offspring that came last. She seemed nervous, her red appendages beating rapidly. "Quail? Is everything alright?" Queen Tangerine asked, her queenly face melting into her motherly love and concern for her dragonet.
Quail took a shaky breath, smoke spilling out. "Mother, it's Pyre and Ignis, it's their dragonet. She has animus magic." Quail said, out of breath. Tangerine growled lowly. "You know what they must do; nothing has changed in years." Quail nodded, finally taking a breath. "That's the problem; they left. They left their daughter." Tangerine was taken aback. Not only did they spare the animus dragonet, but they abandoned the tribe. She sighed, the weight of the crown feeling heavy every day, especially now. With elegant sweeps of her wings, she flew down to the hatchery. The news about an animus magic dragonet had certainly attracted attention, with half of the tribe surrounding the building. The crowd parted like the sea, letting the queen through. The dragonet was hiding her face in her wings, shaking like a leaf in the wind. Her scales are a beautiful red, with her wings darker than her scales. Her tribe was staring at her, wondering what she will do next.
The tiny dragonet looked up at her, her eyes beautiful eyes searing gold. Innocent, young, already knowing that something is wrong, terribly wrong. Remember the Skywing way: do not show weakness. Her dark claws picked up the dragonet, her wings ready to fly up to the cliffs to secure safety for the tribe. Innocent. Young. Alone. Murder. Safety. Her mind fought with itself. What would the tribe think of her if she let the dragonet live? Too many dragonets have died because of something they can't help; what if that changes today? Queen Tangerine's wings folded, holding the tiny dragonet against her chest. Warmth filled the baby Skywing as she nuzzled against the queen's chest, a content sigh escaping her. Murmurs filled the cave, but she ignored them. It's time for a change, to try the Icewing way.
Too many have died. I will not kill Pyre's dragonet.
