The Sunday sunlight beamed down right on his face. Giving him a wake up call before the alarm could.
'What a nice way to wake me up', he thought, as he sat up on his bed. He groaned, "What did I have to do again? Nevermind, I can always think later. It's Sunday anyways."
He got up with practiced ease, and headed for the bathroom. He saw his sleepy face in the mirror, 'Wow, look at me. I look like I was dragged across streets.'
He splashed water on his face, wiped it, and ruffled his hair before combing them.
"Oh right, Father said there was a surprise waiting for me this breakfast. Let's finish this up quick."
He entered the shower, and turned on the water. While simultaneously brushing teeth to save time. As soon as he was done, he dried himself up, changed into washed, casual clothes, and headed directly to the Dining room.
There they were, Mr. and Mrs. Akizuki. She was preparing breakfast in the kitchen while he was sitting at the dining table, at the 'head of the family' seat. He read the newspaper intently, trying his best to hide the hint of smile he had.
'His eyes are smiling so much that I don't even need to see his lips,' Akira smiled and stepped down the stairs to sit on the seat adjacent to his father.
"Father."
He folded the paper and put it aside. Turning to Akira, he smiled, "Yes, my son?"
"If I remember it correctly, you mentioned having a surprise for me at breakfast."
Mr. Akizuki smiled, took out an envelope from his coat pocket and handed it over to him.
"Yesterday, I got a mail from a certain High School," he exhaled a sigh of relief.
He continued, "You have been accepted to the Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School."
Mrs. Akizuki almost squealed from the kitchen, "Really? It is true? I thought you were just joking last night!"
Mr. Akizuki turned to Akira, "So, as you know, it is a high school."
Akira started speaking and completed his sentence, "...funded by the government. Established to raise students who are deemed as future leaders of Japan. It boasts 100% college entry and employment rates. It spares no effort in pursuing the nation's desired future..."
His face went blank. The same blank face you'd expect from someone whose dream just came true, but believing it remains hard. Mr. Akizuki noticed that, and said warmly, "If you need time to stabilize your thoughts, it's fine. Just remember, the date of physically reporting at the campus is in 15 days. Be prepared, it will be hard to meet once you enter."
Akira nodded, and stood up gently. His thoughts were racing in his mind, too fast to actually calm down. He climbed the stairs up to his room, and entered the room.
Closing the door behind, he went and flopped onto the bed, staring at the ceiling.
"This is really happening," he said, as his lips curved into a smile. His eyes grew wet, a single tear escaped and rolled down his right cheek.
A worn-out chuckle escaped his throat, as his smile grew wider, "This is actually happening..."
He sat up, went for the dining room again, "Father, I'm so happy!" He cried out as he ran down the stairs, "This is the best day of my life!"
Mr. Akizuki stood up, spreading his arms wide for a hug. Akira ran and hugged him tight.
"Oh my~ Forgot the mother?" Mrs. Akizuki said.
He ran and hugged her gently, "I love you mother, I love you father. You're the best!"
The next few hours went in the cheerful celebration of Akira being accepted to the Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School. The whole family looked so cheerful that anyone could smile just watching them.
And amidst all of it, Akira sat on the sofa. Which movie was he watching? Forgot. He was too occupied with thoughts to care about a movie.
Mrs. Akizuki thought, 'My son is finally going to high school. I am so happy for him. He is setting a new family record by being accepted into such a marvelous high school.'
Mr. Akizuki thought, 'He has always been the best kind of child anyone would wish for. Of course he got accepted. He has been on the top scorers list always, never getting marks less than 90%! And that's just academics, he is also good at being social, respectful, and kind. I wonder how happy he is feeling to finally get into a high school this special.'
Mr. and Mrs. Akizuki shared a glance, and they shared a common thought, 'I wish he gets the best of what he can get in life.'
Amidst all of this, Akira sat leaning back on the sofa, pretending to watch a movie. Pretending well enough that his parents believed it. But he couldn't be bothered by the movie right now. Too many thoughts were running around in his brain, each begging for attention.
'This is really happening,' he thought as a new smile formed on his lips.
'What sin did I do for this to happen? Was it impossible to be in a normal high school?'
He looked at his parents, smiled and looked back at the movie, 'I can't afford to disappoint them. No way. And now, I have to go to the very high school that-'
His chain of thoughts was cut off by an affectionate but loud voice, "Akira, come here."
He moved quickly on his feet, and entered the kitchen, "I'm here, Father."
Mrs. Akizuki turned around, "We are making your favorite dishes tonight! So eat to your heart's content, Okay?"
Akira smiled warmly, "Of course Mother. May I help you in anything?"
Mrs. Akizuki shook her head, "No dear. Just sit back and enjoy your movie for a while. I'll let you know when the dinner is ready."
Without another word, he left the kitchen and headed back to the living room, "So it's gonna be my favorites. Nice." He played the movie, still pretending to watch.
'Let's not be this judgmental. There is a good chance that we won't be in the same year of high school.'
He looked up at the ceiling, 'Yeah, no worries. But I'll prepared, just in case.'
"What's your plan for the next three years at the ANHS, son?" Mr. Akizuki called out as he entered the living room. Akira jumped slightly, startled by the sudden question.
"What did you ask Father?"
"What's your plan? You're going to be at ANHS for 3 years. Do you have a rough plan in mind?"
"Oh yes, I do. I'll study hard, do the best I can, and graduate peacefully. I will try not to cause any trouble, ever. And I'll try not to get much involved in the matters of the class."
"Now now, Akira, listen carefully. From what I've heard from the interviews of the graduates from ANHS, I think you should plan on working with your classmates well too."
"I will try, Father."
"Sure son. Now, I was actually here to tell you that the dinner is ready. Let's go"
"Yes, Father. Let's go."
Both of them entered the dining room. The entire dining table was decorated with dishes that could make a hungry man's mouth water. Mrs. Akizuki welcomed them, "Please sit down for dinner. I hope you like it."
Akira smiled and stood next to the 'head-of-the-family' seat, pulling it back for his father.
"Father?"
Mr. Akizuki steps forward and sits down. Akira sits on the seat adjacent to his father's. He smiles and joins his hands. "Shall we?"
Mr. and Mrs. Akizuki join their hands too. "We shall."
They pray before eating, as usual. Another smile forms on Akira's face, 'I pray that my 3 years go as uneventful as possible.'
