Scarlett had always known her son was born fragile. From the day he took his first breath, the doctors had warned her that death could come for him at any moment. That knowledge became the chain around her heart, the reason she kept him away from bloodshed, violence, and the darkness of the world they lived in. She wanted him to have what neither she nor Tristian ever had-a childhood filled with laughter instead of gunfire, smiles instead of sorrow.
And for years, it had worked.
Little Jaden was the brightest among the children. His cheerful laughter echoed through the manor, his innocent smile melting even the coldest hearts. Watching him run around happily had always put Scarlett's mind at ease. If fate ever decided to take him away, she had prayed for one thing alone-that it would be peaceful, painless... never like this.
But now, standing on the edge of losing him, she realized there was nothing she could do.
She could have blamed Zaliya. She had every reason to. Yet Scarlett understood the cruel law of the world she ruled better than anyone. In their world, death was never a stranger. It waited around every corner, and no amount of power could erase its existence. Some tragedies were simply inevitable.
Outside the room, Zaliya stood motionless, her gaze fixed on the unconscious little boy through the glass window. Her fingers curled into trembling fists as guilt gnawed relentlessly at her heart.
Please... just one miracle.
That was all she asked.
She couldn't bear to have his life stain her conscience forever. She had been given a second chance by Scarlett, yet she couldn't save the woman who had saved her from experiencing the greatest pain a mother could endure. Every second that passed felt like another weight crushing her soul.
Soon both families were inside, the room was tensed with sorrow, "Sorry Scarlett, I flew back as soon as I heard" her cousin says with a sigh. "I talked to a specialist, he said even if he was saved he'd suffer for a lifetime because the poison have damaged most of his organs. I told my men to look it up and they found out it's an ancient Egypt poison, once it taken no one can save the victim" Scarlett nodded, she was exhausted, physically and mentally.
"Is she coming down?"
Zaliya asked Tristian for what felt like the thirteenth time.
It had been several days since Junior Jaden's passing, yet the Zwick manor still felt as though time had stopped the night they lost him. The usual laughter that once filled every corner had disappeared. Even the children, who were normally impossible to keep quiet, had become unusually subdued. Their voices were softer, their smiles rarer, and no one seemed interested in playing for long.
The dining table had become the loneliest place in the house.
Zaliya couldn't help wondering how long it would take before everyone found their way back to normal. If they ever could.
Would this family ever become the happy family she had met when she first came here?
"She said she's not hungry," Tristian answered with a tired sigh.
He looked exhausted. He had tried everything. Talking to her. Sitting beside her. Pleading with her. Even bringing the children to her, hoping their presence would pull her back from the darkness swallowing her.
Nothing worked.
Scarlett had barely left her room since the funeral.
"We've all tried our absolute best," Dante said, rubbing the back of his neck. "There's nothing else we can do except wait."
