"Dr. St. Claire E.R room 1, Dr. St. Claire E.R room 1, stat"

The noise blasted from the intercom as Dr. St. Claire bolted from the small cot where she had just closee her eyes 10 minutes ago. Ten minutes into what is now a 23 hour shift.

Just one more hour to go and she hightail it out of Ashville Medical Centre and to Pisgah National Park, where she would spend the next month frolicing among the daffodils and smelling the lillies that grew there.

No more waiting for people to start popping up daisies ( If you know you know). Francesca bolted out of bed like her ass was on fire and quickly donned her size 8.5 crocs at her feet. She had flowers and ice cream along with the word princess sprayed across them

There neon pink colour signaled to the world that she was about as girly as a woman can get with high maintaince. These werent your average crocs purchased in a chinese store, but a custom order from Gulce and Gobbana.

Beauty had a price tag but with a six figure a year income it is one she cold thankfully afford. She took 6 full steps to the nurse's desk and looked for Nurse Matthews. She was the guru of the A and E department, and has been her ride or die since the moment they both interned at 25 years old. Now at 35, they have had 10 years together, saving lives and a great work relationship

"Spill"

Dr. St. Claire ordered as Nirae Matthews started to rattle off the information they knew.

"MVA (motor vehicle acident) adult male and female both pronounced dead at the scence, awaiting six year old who has a rib puncture and a collapse left lung. EMT's are two minutes out."

Nurse Matthews said as Francesca steeled herself. Yes her full name was Dr Francesca Lillibeth St. Claire and now all she had to do was to focus on saving the life of this 6 year old

"Have O.R 2 ready we will be coming in hot."

Francesca said to Nurse Matthews as she finished listening to the E.M.T

"Way ahead of you. Already booked. There are 2 nurse and an anesthesiologist on stand by."

Nurse Matthews said as Francesca smiled at her. That was the only repass she would have for a while, as she stood at the entrance to the emergency room, awaiting the arrival of her patient. She moved back and forth on her heels, trying to quell the nervousness that came with her profession.

...One more minute.

That was all that stood between her and her patient. She didnt know the patient's name, and she didnt need to. This child had lostbso much already she didnt need to lose her life too. Then suddenly and expectedly the fouble dooors for the Accident and Emergency Department flew open and there lying innthe middle of the stretcher a little girl approximately six years old, with snow blond hair, blood soaked clothing and brusing and welts all over her body...most likely from the seatbelt after impact.

"Jane Doe, female, approximately six years old, lacerations all over the body. We have have a 4th rib fracture on the left side, and a 2nd and 3rd rib fracture on the right. She was alert and concious, given 10 units of cc. Has a blood pressure of 60/90 and a heart rate of 51 and falling."

She was critical to say the least, but she had seen people in worst shape survive. If that was to happen Francesca knew she had to move immediately. She prayed to whatever God was listening, not to let this innocent child die, before she had even gotten a chance to live.

12 hours....

Well 12 hours and 10 minutes and a few seconds. Thats how long it took to repair most of the damage to Jane Doe. In case you were wondering, that is the name assigned to female patients with no bame or identity present at the time of there visit to the hospital.

Bloodied, bruised and battered

That was how Francessa felt as she jotyed the last of the information on a chart, as well as her reccommended treatment for the child for the next week...definately wanted to avoid giving her any opiods...

What was unavoided however was the called that wpuld be made to the Child Protection Agency (CPA), once the child survived the first battle of her life, she next have to survive the child care system, which was definately not for the weak. Her thoughts and prayers went out to Jane Doe but now, that was out of her hands. It was up to God and a little bit of luck.

"Happy vacation, four weeks of uninterupted downtime. That must be the definition of heaven. And not a chick or child to tie your feet down."

Nurse Matthews said dreamily as Francesca shook her head smiling.

"And yet you wouldnt have it any other way. The whole department knows about your darling husband Jack and your ever inquisitive April. So smart for only three years old."

Francesca complimented as Nurse Matthews smiled.

"You are rigjt. But dont you go worrying about this place. These four weeks are just about you. You know i will lock this place down tight."

Nurse Matthews promised as Francesca smiled at her. That was something she was certain of. Nurse Matthews was an immigrant from Jamaica who came to the U.S., after marrying her husband Jack. Everyday she thank God for that, because her talents qnd natural diagnostic abilities, coupled with her years of service made her an irreplacble part of the team.

"And I'm just a call away."

Francesca said as Nurse Matthews rolled her eyes at her

"So is Dr. Grey, Dr. Avery, Dr. Sloan, Dr. Torrez, should I continue?"

Nursr Matthews said sacrastically as Francesca snickered at her obvious sacrasm.

"Okay, case and point. Love you loads."

Francesca called out as she stepped through the double revolting doors. It was late October and the first chill was setting in. It waent cold enough for full winter gear, but it was close. Francesca wasnt about to take any chances with North Carolina weather. They had a saying here "If you dont like the weather wait two minutes." She stepped out into the parking lot and hightailed it to her black wrangler, seaming in the sun.

Yes it was sunny and snow at the same time. So you run the risj of both frostbite and sunburn...the irony. Her wrangler had been her first big purchase after finishing Med School at 18 years old. She graduated at 23 with a Masters Degree in Medicine specializing in trauma.

She had done what most people do in 8 years in 5. She was dubbed a Harvard Prodigy while also completing research at John Hopkins Unibersity. Francessa became one to watch and has even been feature in Forbes Magazine "Under 30 person of the year"

But all that didnt matter now

She was going to be 26 miles away from her. It would be about 43 minutes from the hospital should they ever need her and about an hour from her home.

As Francesca turned onto I-95 she knew she would have to look out for the turn to her cabin Blue Ridge. It was a joy once Francesca found the turn off and started the long ascend to a destination that would change her life forever
