For the first two weeks, the apartment in Sarrià refused to understand that Alexia Putellas no longer belonged to Barcelona.

At six every morning, her eyes still opened before the alarm.

For a few seconds, everything was normal.

Training.

Coffee.

Car.

Recovery.

Meetings.

Another day measured in minutes, kilometers, heart rate, touches, passes.

Then she would stare at the ceiling and remember.

There was nowhere she had to be.

The first morning, it had felt like freedom.

By the tenth, it felt almost like grief.

Alexia would lie there for another few minutes, listening to a city that had continued without asking whether she was ready.

Barcelona did not care that she had left its football club.

The bakery downstairs still opened at seven.

The neighbor's dog still barked at the delivery man.

Scooters still screamed through the street before breakfast.

People still complained about traffic.

The sun still came through the same bedroom window.

Everything was exactly where she had left it.

Except her.

She had signed the papers on a Tuesday.

Fourteen years reduced to four minutes and a signature.

Barcelona's sporting director had sat across from her with the solemn expression people wore at funerals when they hadn't known the dead particularly well.

"Your legacy here—"

Alexia had almost smiled.

There it was.

Legacy.

Then came history.

Grateful.

Everything you've given this club.

There will always be a place for you here.

All the right words.

Alexia nodded at all the right moments.

Then he pushed the papers toward her.

For some reason, that was the part she remembered most clearly afterward.

Not the speech.

Not the handshake.

The pen.

Cheap.

Black.

Slightly scratched near the clip.

She picked it up and signed her name in the same handwriting she'd used when she signed her first professional contract.

Alexia Putellas.

That was it.

Four minutes later, she walked outside.

Barcelona was offensively beautiful.

The sun was shining.

A scooter nearly hit a tourist at the crossing.
