(Camellia Palmers POV)

I used to think sunsets were beautiful because they meant the day was ending. Charlie taught me they were beautiful because they meant you got to have one more.

One more moment.
One more laugh.
One more memory to hold onto before the sky faded into darkness.

The funny thing about sunsets is that they never look the same twice. Even if you stand in the exact same spot, watching the same horizon, the colours always find a different way to paint themselves across the sky.

Maybe that's why Charlie loved them so much.
He always said the best things in life weren't meant to be repeated. They were meant to be experienced exactly as they happened, messy, unexpected and completely impossible to recreate.
I didn't understand that when I first met him.
Back then, I thought everything had to have a plan.

A beginning.
A middle.
An ending.

I liked knowing what came next. I liked having a clear path in front of me. I liked believing that if I worked hard enough, if I tried hard enough, I could make sure nothing ever went wrong.

Charlie thought differently.
Charlie believed the best moments happened when you stopped trying to control everything.
He believed in taking the long way home just because the sky looked pretty.
He believed in driving with the windows down even when your hair got tangled and you looked ridiculous.
He believed in carrying an old film camera everywhere, because you never knew when you'd find something worth remembering.
And somehow, without even realizing it, he taught me how to live.

The sun dipped lower over Palmer's Flower Farm, casting everything in shades of gold and amber. The same field stretched out in front of me,rows and rows of wildflowers moving gently with the summer breeze.
It looked almost exactly the same.

Almost.

The wooden fence at the edge of the field was still slightly crooked from the storm years ago. The old oak tree still stood tall near the back of the property, its branches reaching toward the sky like it was trying to touch the clouds.
Even the little path through the flowers was still there.
The path Charlie and I had walked so many times that summer.
The path where everything started.
I stepped carefully through the flowers, letting my fingers brush against the petals as I walked. My grandmother always said flowers remembered people.

I never believed her.

Not until Charlie.
Not until I realized that places could hold pieces of people too. This field wasn't just a field anymore.
It was the sound of Charlie laughing when I accidentally stepped into the mud wearing my favourite shoes.
It was the feeling of sitting beside him while he showed me photographs he'd taken.
It was the quiet conversations we had when the rest of the world felt too loud.
It was the place where I learned that someone could walk into your life completely unexpectedly and somehow make everything feel brighter.

I stopped in the middle of the field, looking toward the horizon.
The sunset was almost gone now.
The colours stretched across the sky like a painting, soft pinks, warm oranges and fading golds blending together until they became something impossible to describe.

Charlie would have loved it.

Actually, he would have taken a picture of it.
Then he would have lowered his camera and told me that the picture didn't do it justice.
He always said photographs were special, but they could never capture everything.
They could capture what something looked like.
But they couldn't capture how it felt.
They couldn't capture the sound of someone's laugh.
The way your heart felt lighter around the right person.
The exact moment you realized you were making a memory you'd carry forever.

That was what Charlie understood better than anyone.
He wasn't just chasing photographs,he was chasing moments.
And somehow, he convinced me to start chasing them too.I used to think I needed to know exactly where my life was going. I thought every decision had to lead somewhere important. I thought growing up meant having all the answers.

But that summer changed everything.

It taught me that sometimes the moments you don't plan are the ones that matter most.
Sometimes the person you least expect becomes the person who changes you.
Sometimes a single summer can become something you carry with you for years.
I looked down at the small photograph I held between my fingers.

It was old now.

The edges were slightly worn and the colours had softened with time.
Charlie had taken it here.
In this exact field.
On a day when I wasn't trying to look perfect. When I wasn't thinking about the future or worrying about what came next.
I was just Camellia.
And Charlie had looked at me like that was enough.
Like I was something worth remembering.

A small smile pulled at my lips as I looked back at the sunset.
For a long time, I thought the most beautiful thing about summer was that it lasted forever in your memories, but maybe that wasn't true.
Maybe the most beautiful thing about summer was that it didn't.
Maybe moments were special because they ended.
Maybe sunsets were beautiful because they reminded us to pay attention while we still had light.
Charlie taught me that.

He taught me to notice the little things.
The flowers blooming.
The stars appearing.
The last few minutes of daylight before night arrived.
He taught me that one more moment could be enough.

And standing there in the field where everything started, watching the final rays of sunlight disappear, I finally understood why he loved sunsets so much.
They weren't about saying goodbye.
They were about being grateful you got to see them at all.

And once upon a summer, I got to see one with Charlie Baker. 🌼
