Chapter 1 - A Promise Worth Keeping
"If someone had told me that one borrowed pair of shoes... one dance... and one girl would become the story I'd never stop telling, I would've laughed."
But that's the thing about life.
It never tells you which moment is about to change everything.
---
"Jayden!"
My father's voice echoed across the crowded school compound.
I turned around, my backpack hanging from one shoulder.
"Come here."
He reached into his wallet and counted a few crumpled notes before placing them in my hand.
"I wish I could give you more."
I looked at the money and closed my fingers around it.
"It's enough, Dad."
He smiled, but I knew that smile.
It was the same one he wore whenever he wanted to hide how worried he was.
"Listen to me, Jayden."
His voice became firm.
"I didn't bring you to this school because we're rich."
I nodded.
"I brought you here because I believe you're capable of becoming something greater than I ever had the chance to be."
Those words settled deep inside me.
"This school is expensive. There may be days when I struggle to pay your fees. There may be times you won't have what other students have."
He placed a hand on my shoulder.
"But never let that make you feel smaller than anyone."
"I won't."
"I don't expect you to be the most popular boy here."
He chuckled.
"I don't even expect you to have a girlfriend."
I laughed.
"I only want one thing."
"What's that?"
"When you leave this place... leave with results that nobody can take away from you."
I looked him straight in the eyes.
"I promise."
For the first time that morning, he smiled without forcing it.
He pulled me into a quick hug.
"I'm proud of you already."
As I watched his old Toyota disappear through the school gate, reality finally hit me.
Four years in an all-boys school...
...and now I was standing in one of the most prestigious mixed schools in the country.
Luxury cars filled the parking lot.
Students greeted each other like they'd never been apart.
Some already looked like they belonged.
I didn't.
"First year?"
I turned.
A tall boy stood beside me with two mattresses balanced on his shoulder.
"You look like you're calculating the shortest route back home."
I laughed.
"Is it that obvious?"
"Very."
He dropped one mattress on the ground and held out his hand.
"I'm Brandon."
"Jay."
"Come on, Jay."
He picked up the mattress again.
"I'll show you the dorms before someone steals your bed."
Maybe this school wouldn't be so bad after all.
I had no idea that before the week was over...
...I'd meet a girl whose face I couldn't even see.
And somehow...
I'd never forget her eyes.
