2026
Hi. I am Shivangi.
And right now I am here in the middle of an ocean, standing on the deck of a yacht - completely surrounded by water.
And I am here staring at the skyline with a friend of mine.
A friend who changed the way I used to see the world.
A friend who filled colours into a life I didn't even know was black and white.
But before all of that, this is the story of...
"How I met him"
April 2021
I was pursuing B.Com from Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Delhi University.
I lived in a PG near the college. The distance between my PG and the college was short enough that I usually walked.
Because I was in the morning batch, my classes always wrapped up by the afternoon.
One afternoon after class, I was heading towards Malviya Nagar Metro Station.
I had a late night train to my hometown Kolkata from New Delhi Railway Station.
It was a big deal because after this trip, I knew I wouldn't get a chance to go back home for almost three months.
When I was entering the Gate 3 of Malviya Nagar metro station, I saw a guy.
He was around 5'8" or 5'9" , an inch or two taller than me.
He was wearing baggy jeans, an oversized t-shirt and a crossbody bag on one shoulder.
But what caught me first wasn't what he was wearing.
It was his expression.
It didn't suit his face at all.
He looked frustrated like the world owed him something.
I don't know why, but in that exact second, I felt like what people call "love at first sight" might actually be real.
My eyes were just completely stuck on him.
I watched him step off the escalator, walked a few steps, and got into a rickshaw.
And then he vanished.
Only then did I realise I was standing right in the middle of the chaos outside the metro station.
Rickshaw drivers were shouting for passengers and three of them had already surrounded me, staring at my face.
"Where do you wanna go? College?" they asked.
"Metro" I replied.
"Which one?"
"Malviya Nagar."
They all turned away with disappointment and I'm pretty sure they cursed me.
I took the metro and to get him out of my head, I plugged in my earphones and turned on some music.
I reached the railway station and by the next day, I was back home in Kolkata.
But the weird thing was that guy's face just wouldn't disappear from my mind. It was there with me on the train and now it was right there with me in my bedroom too.
His curly hair.
His thick brows.
His pale skin shining under the sunlight.
But why did helook so frustrated? Why were his brows so frowned?
Honestly, I wanted to know the reason but I knew I couldn't. I mean, how could I? I didn't even know his name.
After freshening up, I sat at my study table. Exams were almost three months away, butstill the expectations people had of me, the eyes watching, I couldn't let them down.
I've always been what people call a nerd. Topper of my class all through school. And now for my parents and to be a proper role model for my younger sister, I wanted to get a merit rank in graduation so I could get into a good university for my masters.
But as I sat there, just fidgeting with the pen in my hand, his face came back.
I shook my head and focused on the book in front of me.
My one week vacation ended and I came back to Delhi.
My schedule was packed. In the morning,, I had back-to-back classes and in the evening dance rehearsals, because the university fest season had begun.
I was in Natyamantra, the folk dance society of our college. I hadn't joined because I loveddancing. I joined because extra curriculars looked good on a profile and gave extra points. That was the kind of person I was.
The fest season started, and we performed at different colleges, competing against different societies day after day.
Finally, it was time to perform our last performance of the fest season at Sri Aurobindo College.
To be continued..
