Sunday's began like any other. Early morning breakfast, which meant Cassie shoveling her food into her already overstuffed cheeks. This horrible habit also always seemed to lead to the Heimlich being a familiar name to the routine. Cassandra managed to always take things too far, not bothering to spare her mother the daily heart attack. Full of spunk like her father. The family was small, I observed. A total of four, rather unmentionable creatures. The reason I give my detailed input will become very clear later on.
Barley, the so called 'man of the house' started his day with chores like every other gentleman who's lived here before them. He wore spectacles that were barely being held together by three strands of twine that took almost all of the December's farmers market income to be able to afford. He was a rather large fellow, standing tall and wide amongst others in their equally as unmentionable town. A husky man, no thanks to his wife's education on the culinary art.
While he worked in the scalding sun of Mississippi, his family collectively took care of the home. While the mother tended to Cassandra, the cheek stuffing eight year old, the more recent addition slept against the warmth of his mother's bosom. Robbie was much less obnoxious than his older sister, very quiet for a two year old. His day started with a large variety of mush hand fed to him by a different member of his family every day. Whether it be the dreaded carrots or the beloved applesauce. I have no idea why they feed him slop when more appealing options lay all around the house.
Cassandra was a lamb. Even though she was the cause many gray hairs that had sprouted amongst her parents heads, she was a great deal of help. She assisted her father in carrying eggs and crops back and forth from coop to house and garden to sink. She wore the same pigtails of bouncy braids done every night after her bath so her thick hair wouldn't be too tangled. Cassie wasn't afraid of scratched knees or splinters, but she did not like the dark. So a candle was set on her side table, and by the time she was fast asleep, it would have already burnt out.
Now for the wife. Robin, or affectionately known as 'birdie' by her whole family, ran a strict household. Shes a force to be reckoned with for sure, and I have no desire to get on her bad side. Her rules, designed to keep her children safe, restricted them from life changing activities! No opening the door without the knowledge of who was there or what they wanted. Cassandra, of course, never listened. It never occurred to her that evil was out there, or that anything could possibly ever want to get her. Birdie tended to be nervous, for reasons I am unsure of, but not thankful for. It made her timid, and though Barley always tried to reassure her of the good that rested in Appalachia..she simple just knew otherwise.
