Notes:
This story is set in an adjusted crossover timeline, focused less on exact dates and more on where Patrick Jane and Dexter Morgan are emotionally when they meet again.
Patrick is around late Season 5 / almost Season 6 of The Mentalist, just right before Red John is dealt with. He still carries the smile, the charm, and the tricks, but they sit differently now. He is sharper, darker, and much closer to the end of the obsession that has shaped him for years.
Dexter is in the aftermath of Rita's death, early Season 5, still working at Miami Metro, still wearing the mask, and still passing for ordinary. He is no longer the same man Patrick first encountered in Miami; grief has changed him, and so has the fragile knowledge that some people survive violence by becoming harder to read.
This story begins after Patrick and Dexter have already crossed paths once before.
The first thing Patrick noticed was that the dead man's shoes were clean.
That was wrong.
Not impossible, not even particularly strange at first glance, but wrong in the quiet, irritating way a crooked painting was wrong. The kind of wrong most people walked past. The kind Patrick had spent most of his life pretending not to care about until it ruined his afternoon.
The body sat in the middle of an empty dining room in an unfinished house at the edge of a half-built development outside Sacramento. The house had no furniture except for the chair beneath the victim and the table in front of him. No curtains. No rugs. No framed photographs of happy people with sunlit teeth. Just drywall, dust, exposed sockets, and the pale morning light slipping through unwashed windows.
The dead man had been placed at the table like a guest.
Hands folded.
Back straight.
Chin tipped slightly downward.
His shoes, dark leather and expensive, had been wiped clean and aligned perfectly with the legs of the chair.
Patrick stood in the doorway with one hand in his pocket and the other curled loosely around a paper cup of tea that had gone cold fifteen minutes ago.
He disliked the shoes.
He disliked the room.
He disliked the table.
But most of all, he disliked how much care someone had taken.
Behind him, Lisbon was talking to the first responding officer in the clipped, steady voice she used when a scene was ugly enough that everyone nearby wanted permission to look away. She did not give it to them.
Patrick heard fragments.
"Construction crew found him..."
"No signs of forced entry..."
"Owner says nobody's been inside since last week..."
"Neighbors?"
"Not many to ask."
Patrick stepped farther into the room.
The floor was bare concrete under a thin layer of construction dust. There were footprints around the chair. Several sets. Police, EMTs, maybe the workers who found him. Messy now. Useless in the way crime scenes became useless when living people rushed toward the dead and made everything human again.
