The Sky-Blue Slip-Up

The mid-summer beach party at Camp Half-Blood was supposed to be a standard, rowdy affair. The Long Island Sound lapped gently against the shore, illuminated by a roaring bonfire that sent sparks dancing into the twilight sky. Music blared from a portable stereo system, and the scent of saltwater and roasted marshmallows filled the air.

By the refreshment table, Pollux and the rest of the Dionysus cabin were huddled together, looking entirely too pleased with themselves. They had spent the last two hours playing bartender, but their real masterpiece sat in the center of the table: a massive, crystal-clear punch bowl filled with a vibrant, bubbling strawberry concoction.

The Dionysus cabin had grown profoundly tired of the suffocating, unspoken romantic tension clogging the camp's atmosphere all summer. Taking matters into their own hands, Pollux had harvested a few glowing grapes infused with his father's leftover, minor vine-magic. With a little cooperative sorcery from a passing Hecate camper, they had brewed a heavily modified, delayed-release truth potion. The magical elixir was seamlessly stirred into the strawberry punch. It was perfectly clear, completely odorless, and ready to cause absolute chaos.

A few yards away from the dancing, Nico di Angelo sat on a driftwood log, looking like a dark smudge against the golden beach sands. He was thoroughly miserable. The summer heat was oppressive, sticking his dark hair to his forehead and making his black aviator jacket feel like a personal sauna. His throat was parched, and his usual brooding energy was completely drained by the humidity.

Needing anything cold to lower his body temperature, Nico trudged over to the refreshment table. He completely ignored Pollux's overly enthusiastic grin as he grabbed a large plastic cup, filled it to the brim with the strawberry punch, and drained half of it in one long, desperate gulp. It was incredibly sweet, icy cold, and sent a welcome shiver down his spine.

"Hey, Death Boy!"

Nico suppressed a sigh, though his heart gave an involuntary, familiar thump. Will Solace was walking toward him, practically radiating his own sunlight. Will looked ridiculously bright and cheerful, wearing an open, floral-print Hawaiian shirt over his orange Camp Half-Blood t-shirt. He had a medical clipboard tucked under one arm and a look of stern, brotherly concern on his face.

"I'm tracking hydration levels tonight, and you are historically my worst offender," Will said, stopping right in front of Nico. He glanced at the half-empty cup in Nico's hand and smiled warmly. "How are you feeling, Death Boy?"

Nico opened his mouth, fully intending to give his usual sarcastic shrug, roll his eyes, and tell Will to mind his own business.

Instead, a completely different set of words bypassed his brain and tumbled out of his mouth.

"Terrified because your eyes look like clear summer skies in this lighting and it makes my chest ache."

The silence that followed between them was sudden and deafening.

Nico instantly slapped both hands over his mouth, his dark eyes widening to the size of saucers. A wave of pure, unadulterated horror washed over him. His brain scrambled to understand what had just happened. He hadn't meant to say that. He had promised himself he would never say anything like that out loud.

Before Will could even process the confession, the peace of the beach party shattered.

"I accidentally broke the Hermes cabin's back window last week and blamed it on a rogue harpy!" Travis Stoll yelled at the top of his lungs from across the bonfire, looking utterly shocked by his own voice.

"Oh yeah?!" Sherman Yang from the Ares cabin bellowed back, his face turning a deep crimson. "Well, I still sleep with a pink teddy bear named Corporal Snuggles and I cry when it gets lost!"

All around the bonfire, the truth potion was taking hold. Campers were shouting out their deepest, most embarrassing secrets, clutching their own throats in sheer panic as their filters completely vanished.

Nico's gaze darted from the chaotic crowd back to the strawberry punch in his hand, and then to Pollux, who was snickering wildly by the table. The punch was spiked.

Panic seized Nico's chest, tight and suffocating. He looked up at Will, whose jaw was slightly slack, his blue-gold eyes blinking in absolute bewilderment as he tried to process Nico's sudden poetic admission. Nico couldn't be here for this. He couldn't face the aftermath of what he had just blurted out.

Driven by pure survival instinct, Nico dropped his cup into the sand and reached for the shadows pooling beneath the driftwood log. He summoned his energy to shadow-travel, desperate to put a hundred miles between himself and the beach.

But his focus was completely shattered. His heart was hammering against his ribs, his mind racing with embarrassment, and the magical punch was still singing in his veins.

The darkness swallowed him, but the trip was violently short. With a disorienting lurch, Nico stumbled out of a shadow and collapsed onto a hard linoleum floor.

He groaned, rubbing his aching temples, and looked around. The space was pitch-black, silent, and smelled heavily of antiseptic, clean linens, and eucalyptus. It was the Camp Infirmary. It was completely empty, dark, and safely away from the beach.

Nico slumped against the base of an empty cot, burying his face in his hands. He had escaped the party, but he was trapped in the one place that belonged entirely to the boy he had just accidentally confessed to.
