Sometimes a simple moment can define the rest of our lives.
Like chasing a butterfly across the meadow and nearly drowning in that cold river, she didn't even realize she was about to stop breathing. It would've been terribly easy if her cousin hadn't pulled her back from the water that evening, she would think too many years later.
Or hearing adults lower their voices and realizing they were talking about something important.
Or hearing her little brother repeat something at dinner and realizing he actually believed it.
Or meeting him for the first time, she never thought much of it.
She remembers it foggily now. The sound of the rain against the glass roof of the station, the book balanced on his knee. The sort of small details that stay long after everything else has faded.
You rarely notice these moments when they're happening.
She certainly didn't.
