It was a peaceful day in the Mushroom Kingdom. Of course it was - until it wasn't. Most non-peaceful days start out in an entirely different way than they end, a lesson the Mario Brothers had learned the hard way more times than they could count.
Mario, hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, was lounging in a deck chair, a cold soda in one hand. He could think of nothing else he would rather be doing than this - except maybe a casual game of Ping Pong.
After everything he had been through, he deserved a little downtime. It had been exactly three long years since the wild, chaotic events of Smashville. For a long time, things had been a blur. But recently, Mario had been finally released from his memory class back in Smashville. The memory loss potion had been finally cleared, and now, he remembered everything that had happened back in Smashville, thanks to those Miis and Villagers. The battles, the bonds, and victories - it was all back.
His peaceful reminiscing was abruptly cut short when Luigi came tearing across the lawn. He was running at top speed, panting and wheezing heavily as he approached the deck chair.
Mario smiled as he pushed his sunglasses to rest on the brim of his iconic red cap. "Didn't I tell you that you should start that exercise regimen with me back at the beginning of summer?"
"Mario... we got... we got..."
"We got lazy." Mario finished for him. "I'm all for good food and an stress-free lifestyle, but if my brother can't even take a brisk jog without-"
"We got trouble!" Luigi gasped out, his face pale.
Instantly, Mario was on his feet, his magazine and soda long forgotten. The relaxed, nostalgic warrior was gone, replaced by the hero who had saved worlds. "What is it, Luigi?"
"A big dragon-like creature is destroying the Mushroom Kingdom and killing all the Toads!" Luigi told him, his hands shaking slightly as he wiped a thick layer of sweat from his brow.
A sharp jolt of adrenaline hit Mario's system. Three years since they stopped Master Hand from becoming a tyrannical King in Smashville. He had almost forgotten what it felt like to have his heart race like this.
"Those darned villains!" Mario burst out, anger flaring up as he jammed his feet securely into his heavy workboots, stomping down to tighten the laces. "Can't they leave us alone for five seconds?!"
Luigi shrugged, his eyes darting to the table. sensing an opportunity, he surreptitiously picked up Mario's abandoned soda and took a massive, desperate sip to wet his now-parched throat. He let out a relieved sigh before answering.
"They did, actually; Dark Lands has been quiet for the last couple of months. I wonder what they're up to?" Luigi mused, looking out toward the distant, stormy horizon where dark clouds were suddenly beginning to gather.
Mario clenched his fists so tightly, a familiar, dangerous fire already burning deep in his eyes. The peace was officially over. The echoes of Smashville were calling them back to duty, and this time, the threat was right on their doorstep.
"No time to psychoanalyze the minds of madmen," Mario declared, adjusting his cap with a sharp, determined flick of his wrist. "We got a kingdom to save!"
