Chapter 1

Kaveh's earliest memory was of trying to make a friend at the playground. He'd asked this little boy whether he knew the alphabet yet and, upon receiving a negative reply, decided to write it down for him. Except, little Kaveh had gone a step further. Every letter had been hand drawn, painstakingly decorated with tiny flourishes and ornate swirls that belied his toddler age.

Once satisfied with the finished product, the blond had returned to his friend and proudly handed him the piece of paper with a bright smile on his face.

The other boy had reluctantly accepted the unwanted gift, muttering a half-hearted 'thanks'. The reaction hadn't deterred Kaveh and when he saw the boy throw the paper away at the end of the day, he'd just assumed it was because his friend had already memorized each letter and no longer needed it.

Burgundy eyes snapped open at the first sliver of sunlight peeking through the curtains.

No longer was he that toddler, handing handmade notes to strangers. Now he was an adult with adult responsibilities, yet he never held back a helping hand.

Today was no different.

He was scheduled to hold an open lecture on the basics of architecture for the children of Sumeru. It was volunteer work, unpaid and time-consuming, yet nothing was more rewarding to him than passion projects.

With a groan he swung his feet off the side of the bed and dragged his weight to the bathroom.

Occupied.

Muttering under his breath a protest against his sluggish housemate, Alhaitham, he redirected himself towards the kitchen to prepare coffee.

By the time the drink was ready, the bathroom had finally been vacated. Kaveh immediately abandoned the kitchen and brushed past Alhaitham with a grumbled, "Took you long enough."

Alhaitham merely exhaled through his nose as he dried damp hair with a towel on the way to have breakfast.

Some half an hour later, Kaveh finally emerged from the bathroom himself, looking refreshed. Alhaitham only caught a glimpse of blond hair before the figure disappeared into its room to get ready.

Teal eyes flickered to the untouched mug of coffee waiting on the table, no doubt having gone cold.

With a slight shake of his head, the scribe returned his attention to his book. He wasn't one to drink anything during his reading time for the slight chance of spilling it on the pages, so he wasn't sure why Kaveh always made so much coffee in the mornings.

At some point, Kaveh wandered into the kitchen again to grab a toast of bread to eat on the way.

Alhaitham never looked up from his book as he spoke up

"I prepared two lunch boxes, yours is in the fridge."

Kaveh clicked his tongue as he shoved the toast into his mouth.

"I have no means of carrying it. Besides, I won't have time to eat it anyways."

Alhaitham resisted the urge to sigh - it was like carrying for a child which refused to accept it.

"Suit yourself." he replied instead.

Thankfully Kaveh didn't seem to have time to start an argument, for he was out the room the next second and putting his shoes on at the front door the next.

"I'm out!" he called out loud enough for Alhaitham to hear, though they both knew no response would come.

Kaveh's days were always hectic but he wouldn't have it any other way for to rest meant to be alone with his thoughts. And he would much rather drown in work, especially if said work involved being useful for his community.
