To Freedom

The funny thing about change is... no one ever tells you exactly when it starts.

Sometimes it's loud.

Obvious.

Life-altering.

And sometimes... it's quiet.

Like a random night in London, a half-finished spliff, and a boy you've known your whole life, suddenly looking at you like he's seeing you for the first time whilst 'Get You' by Daniel Caesar played faintly in the background.

Inhale.

Exhale.

He's sat across from me like he always has.

Something felt off. Not bad. But different.

"Mad how we're actually leaving," I said, exhaling slowly, watching the smoke disappear into the night.

"You're leaving," he corrected, taking the spliff from my hand and taking a puff. "I'm still gonna be here."

I rolled my eyes. "Same difference."

It wasn't though, and I think we both knew that.

A weird pause. Not awkward... just heavy. Like something was trying to be said, but neither of us wanted to be the one to say it first.

"You're actually gonna behave, yeah?" he said eventually.

I laughed because what did he mean by that?

"What does that even mean?"

He shrugged, but he didn't look away this time.

"You know what it means."

I did.

And that's when it clicked for me. Not fully ... but enough.

Because after all these years of knowing the twins, Kairo had never looked at me like that.

Never cared like that.

Never said things like that.

I was just his sister's annoying best friend.

And now suddenly...

Right before I was about to leave...

He did.

Funny.

I tilted my head, studying him for a second.

"You gonna come visit me then?"

"Of course," he replies. Rather quickly, might I add.

I smiled, but something about it didn't feel as exciting as it should have been.

Because deep down...

I couldn't help but think, where was all this before?

The attention.

The interest.

The timing.

I spent nearly a decade yearning in silence.

But I didn't say that out loud. I just took the spliff back, leaned back in my chair and let the silence sit between us again.

Because the truth is, I think a part of me already knew that... whatever this was... It had come a little too late.

I look up at the stars, admiring them, thinking about the new life that was waiting for me in a new city, along with the sweet taste of freedom. The loud honking of the cars driving below us took me out of my trance, and I glanced over to Kairo, already looking at me.

I made a fake stank face. "What big head?"

He just laughed, shaking his head, his dimples popping out slightly. "Ima miss you, ugly. Let me know if any guys try you out there," he said, his serious tone slightly shining through.

I smiled and nodded, slowly edging my chair closer to his so that our knees could touch. Let's just stay in this moment for now. Because everything was about to change... whether I was ready or not.
