The wind on the cliffs of Mewni always tasted like sea salt and magic, but today, it just felt cold. Nova stood rigid, her combat boots sinking slightly into the soft earth. Her gaze was fixed on the fresh stone marker.

IZZY: A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS.

"He didn't even stay for the final prayer," Nova spat, her voice cracking like a whip. She gripped the strap of her rifle until her knuckles turned white. "After everything Izzy did... after she literally gave up her soul so he could keep his, Ace just walks away? Like we were some seasonal side-quest?"

Luna stood a step behind her, her eyes red-rimmed but calm. She reached out, placing a steady hand on Nova’s shoulder. "He’s a nomad, Nova. He’s spent lifetimes being a boy who never grows up. He doesn't know how to stand still, especially when the silence is this loud."

"It’s an insult," Nova whispered, a single tear of rage escaping. "He’s a coward."

"He's hurting," Luna countered softly. "Just like we are. It’s not your fault he left, and it’s not mine. He just... doesn't have a home to stay in anymore."

The somber peace was shattered by a sound that made both girls jump.

BONG. BONG. BONG.

The Great Bells of Butterfly Castle weren't chiming a melody. They were clanging in a frantic, dissonant rhythm.

"The Siege Toll," Luna gasped, her face draining of color.

Black smoke began to coil into the afternoon sky from the palace spires. Then came the sound that haunted their nightmares, the demons.

"They’re back," Nova growled, her grief instantly hardening into a soldier’s focus. She snapped her rifle bolt back. "I don’t know how, but they’re back."

"The Castle!" Luna cried. "We need to help them"

They didn't run; they sprinted. As they reached the outer gates, the scene was a bloodbath. The Royal Guards, in their gleaming cornflower armor, were being torn from their positions by shadows that moved like liquid.

"Form a perimeter!" Nova yelled, sliding into cover behind a fallen stone pillar.

Bang. Bang.

Two demons vanished into purple mist as her enchanted rounds found their marks.

Luna moved liked ice, her orb dashing through the sky. She smashed through a demon that was lunging for a wounded guard.

"Push toward the Main Hall! They’re heading for the throne!" Nova yelled as she came out if cover.

They fought through the corridors, the walls scorched by dark magic. The familiar tapestries of Mewni’s history were shredded and burning. Every step felt like a descent back into the hell they thought they had escaped.

They burst through the heavy oak doors of the Main Hall.

The room was a whirlwind of chaos. In the center stood Queen Star, her wand glowing with a fierce, unstable gold. She was surrounded by a dozen demons, her breathing labored. She wasn't just fighting; she was standing over a group of terrified castle staff, shielding them with her own body.

"Mom!" Luna screamed, leaping over a pile of debris.

Star looked up, a flash of relief crossing her tired face. "Luna! Stay back!"

In that split second of distraction, a shadow—larger and more refined than the others—materialized from the ceiling. It carried a jagged blade of pure void energy.

"NO!" Nova fired, but a demon threw itself in front of the bullet.

The dark blade struck. It didn't draw blood; it drew light. Star gasped, her wand clattering to the marble floor with a hollow ring. The gold in her eyes flickered and died out like a spent candle. She fell to her knees, the magical butterfly wings on her back crumbling into ash.

The demons let out a collective, chilling shriek of victory. As if their mission was complete, they began to retreat, melting into the shadows and flowing out through the shattered windows.

The hall fell into a deafening, ringing silence.

Luna was at her mother’s side in an instant, cradling Star’s head in her lap. "Mom? Mom, look at me. Use your magic, please, just heal it..."

Star’s hand, shaking and pale, reached up to touch Luna’s cheek. She didn't have the strength to speak, but her eyes held a desperate, final command: Protect them. Her hand fell limp. The marks on her cheeks faded into nothingness.

Outside, the howling grew louder. The demons hadn't left Mewni; they had only left the palace. They were gathering in the streets, surrounding the walls, trapped in a city that had just lost its heart.

Nova stood by the window, looking out at the thousands of glowing red eyes in the dark. She looked back at Luna, who was sobbing over the Queen's body.

"They're still out there," Nova said, her voice hollow and cold. "And we're all that's left."
