Clara and Julian had been inseparable since they were seven years old, bound together by scraped knees, shared treehouses, and a mutual hatred for the crusts on sandwiches. Two decades later, the treehouse had been traded for the glittering skyline of the city, but their orbit around one another hadn't changed by a single degree.
Julian had grown into the kind of handsome that made strangers do a double-take on the street—tall, with dark, laughing eyes and a sharp jawline that belonged on a billboard. Clara, with her cascaded chestnut hair and effortlessly radiant smile, was beautiful in a way that made a room feel warmer the second she walked in. They were the ultimate platonic power couple, a fact that had survived high school, college, and now, the grueling demands of adulthood.
In fact, their lives were so intertwined it was almost comical. They worked in the exact same skyscraper downtown, their glass-walled offices sitting right next door to each other on the forty-second floor. Whenever Clara was stuck on a marketing campaign, she only had to look through the glass to see Julian deeply focused on his architectural blueprints. A quick tap on the pane was all it took to signal a coffee break.
The proximity didn't stop at 5:00 PM. They rented apartments in the same downtown building, doors literally side-by-side: 14A and 14B. It was the perfect setup, especially since they were both happily tethered to other people.
Julian was newly engaged to Vanessa, a breathtakingly gorgeous high-fashion model whose face regularly graced the covers of elite magazines. With her endless legs, icy blonde hair, and glamorous lifestyle, she was the ultimate prize. Julian adored her, even if her grueling international shoot schedule meant he spent more evenings eating takeout with Clara than dining at five-star restaurants with his fiancée.
Clara, on the other hand, was deeply in love with Leo. Leo was a professional track-and-field athlete, a man built entirely of sculpted muscle, discipline, and golden-boy charisma. He spent hours at the training facility, his life dictated by stopwatch times and strict diets, but he always made sure to bring Clara flowers when he finally made it home.
"You know," Julian said one Tuesday evening, leaning against the doorframe of Clara's apartment while she cooked dinner, "Vanessa's back from Milan tomorrow. We're supposed to do the cake tasting for the wedding."
"And Leo has his regional qualifiers on Friday," Clara sighed, flipping a chicken breast in the pan. "It feels like we only ever see our partners in passing lately."
"At least we have each other to complain to," Julian chuckled, stealing a carrot stick from her cutting board.
It was true. They had their perfect, beautiful partners, and they had their perfect, reliable friendship. Everything in their lives was neatly categorized, separated by a polite, comfortable boundary. Neither of them realized how fragile those walls actually were.
