The New Term
The first day of a new school term at Westbrook High School was always noisy.
Students filled the hallways, laughing, talking, and sharing stories about their holidays. Lockers slammed open and shut while teachers tried to organize the excited teenagers rushing from one classroom to another.
Seventeen-year-old Laura walked quietly through the hallway with her backpack resting on one shoulder.
Unlike many of the other students, she wasn’t excited about the new term.
For Laura, school meant something else.
Memories.
Memories she wished she could forget.
“Laura!”
She turned as someone called her name.
Her best friend Mina waved from across the hallway and hurried toward her.
“You’re late again,” Mina said with a playful smile.
Laura shrugged slightly. “I’m not late. Class hasn’t started.”
Mina laughed. “Only you would say that.”
The two girls had been friends since their first year at Westbrook High School. Mina was energetic and talkative, while Laura was calm and observant.
People often wondered how they became such close friends.
But Mina always said something simple.
“Laura understands things other people don’t.”
They walked toward their classroom together.
“So,” Mina said, lowering her voice, “did you hear the news?”
“What news?” Laura asked.
“There’s a new student joining our class today.”
Laura didn’t seem very interested.
“Students transfer all the time.”
“Yes,” Mina said dramatically, “but not like this one.”
Laura looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Mina glanced around to make sure no teacher was nearby.
“They say he was transferred from another school because of… problems.”
Laura raised an eyebrow.
“What kind of problems?”
Mina shrugged.
“No one knows exactly. But some people say he got into serious trouble with other students.”
Laura sighed slightly.
Rumors always spread quickly in school.
“Let’s just meet him first,” Laura said. “Then we can decide if the rumors are true.”
Just then, the school bell rang.
Students quickly rushed into their classrooms.
Laura and Mina entered their classroom and sat in their usual seats near the window.
A few minutes later, their teacher, Mr. Daniels, walked in.
“Good morning, class.”
“Good morning, sir,” the students replied.
Mr. Daniels placed his books on the desk.
“Before we start today’s lesson, we have a new student joining us.”
The classroom immediately became quiet.
Everyone looked toward the door.
Mr. Daniels continued.
“Please come in.”
The door slowly opened.
A tall teenage boy stepped inside.
His expression was calm, almost serious.
“Class,” Mr. Daniels said, “this is Ryan Carter. He will be studying with us from today.”
Ryan nodded slightly.
“Hello.”
Some students whispered quietly.
Mina leaned toward Laura.
“That’s him.”
Laura studied the new student carefully.
Ryan looked confident but distant, like someone who preferred to stay alone.
Mr. Daniels pointed to an empty seat.
“You may sit over there.”
Ryan walked to the seat.
Unfortunately for Laura…
It was the seat right behind her.
Mina tried not to laugh.
“Looks like you’ve got a new neighbor.”
Laura ignored her and focused on the teacher.
But something strange happened.
When Laura slightly turned her head, she noticed Ryan watching her.
Not just casually.
He was staring at her like he recognized her.
Laura frowned slightly.
She was sure they had never met before.
So why did he look at her like that?
Then, during lunch break, something even stranger happened.
Laura was standing by her locker when Ryan suddenly approached her.
“Laura,” he said calmly.
She turned.
“Yes?”
Ryan looked directly at her.
“I think we need to talk.”
Laura crossed her arms.
“About what?”
Ryan hesitated for a moment before answering.
“About something that happened last year.”
Laura’s expression changed instantly.
Last year?
Only a few people knew about what happened last year.
And none of them were Ryan.
“How do you know about that?” she asked quietly.
Ryan didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he said something that made Laura’s heart sink.
“Because,” he said slowly, “someone in this school isn’t telling you the truth.”
Laura felt a cold wave of confusion.
“What are you talking about?”
Ryan leaned closer and whispered something that shocked her completely.
“You shouldn’t trust everyone… even your closest friends.”
Before Laura could ask another question—
Ryan turned and walked away.
Leaving Laura standing there, wondering only one thing.
Who was he talking about?
And why did it feel like everything she believed might soon fall apart?
