Maya stared at the blinking cursor on her screen like it was daring her to click “Apply.”
Every single one of her friends had a summer plan that sounded like it belonged in a movie. Coding camps in Silicon Valley, art residencies in Paris, some kid even got invited to shadow a senator in Washington.
And here she was, hovering over a website that looked like it had been designed in 1998 by someone who hated colors.
Life can be so unfair!!!
Her dad had been hounding her for weeks. “Summer school is good for you, Maya,” he said, and she could almost hear the hidden threat in the way he said it. Apparently, sitting at home binge-watching everything on streaming wasn’t going to cut it.
She clicked.
The confirmation page popped up with a blinking, almost cheerful message: 'Welcome to Summer School.
'The Arkwright Institute of Strategic Arts.'
Are you really, really sure? Because we are not responsible for… literally anything. '
Maya laughed nervously, the kind of laugh that makes people think she’s joking when really she was terrified.
This isn't weird at all...
Before she could ponder it longer, her mom called "Maya!! Get down here already; Breakfast is ready"
"Coming!!!"
Quickly clicking on the Apply button and rushing downstais:
'Application: Pending....'.

Groaning she slumps on the dinning chair across from her dad who seems weirdly fascinated at the newspaper he held.
"Hmm, Says here that the Mori Global Solutions just created a new tech called the 'Surveyalizer' said to enhance global security...tsk, that's not suspicious at all"
He scowled.
Maya just rolled her eyes, for some reason her dad just hates the MGS.
He's been watching them for as long as she could remember.
"Dad!!, you know there just helping, I mean they sponsor charity, no evil sickos gonna do that, it's too good"
"Aha!!! That's what they want you to think, can't believe my own daughter fell for it".
He rasphed .
"Now now honey, calm down"
Mrs Hart sooted, dropping the dishes gently on the table.
"I am calm".
He responded, crossing his arms like a child.
"Plus, you guys act like I hate the Mori or something "
Maya and her mom gave him a deadpan confused looks that screamed; Don't you!!
"I don't, I mean look at the Mori International Enterprises, I've never complained about them, there good"he argued he's point.
Maya simply raised a brow.
"That's because your biased dad ".
*gasp*
"Besides..."she adds deciding to ignore her father's affronted gasp"who cares about some rich guy when I'm going to some knock off summer camp ".
*Sigh*
"Not this again"Mr Hart responded, leaning back, arms crossed.
"What. It's the truth!!!. I wanna spend my summer somewhere cool like all my friends".
"Sweetie, we've had this discussion before..."the gentle voice of her mother intercepts"Sweetie, we’ve talked about this. It's not healthy to constantly compare yourself to everyone else.”
Grabbing her fork and stabbing it a bit to forcefully to her breakfast, she rasphed
"Then how am I gonna get a life, I should be on social media posting famous celebrities or cool skydives like every other teen my age "

ActionHey, I'm Maya. People usually think of summer as sunshine, lazy mornings, and camps where you roast marshmallows over a fire. My summer is a little different. My camp sits on an island that doesn't appear on any map. The boats that bring you here do...
