Prologue
“Hello monsieur!” I said cheerfully. It was a beautiful morning in the town and the weather and people were delightful. I was here with My Lady Baroness, Marguerite, and Jacqueline. Instead the Baroness and her two daughters were off trying to win Prince Gavin Laurent of France’s heart. I thought it was pathetic really. Them throwing themselves at the prince. It was actually kind of hilarious.
“Ahem,” Our usual costumer said as he cleared his throat.
“What was that monsieur?”
“Oh, you were lost in thought and I was trying to get your attention.”
“Oh, well there is no need for that. Our day is drawing to a close and we must soak up each day as much as are last, right?”
“Yes, of course. But I was wondering if you could give some of those fresh herbs, some carrots, and some fruit. Any would be delightful.” I nodded a yes and turned around and started bagging the carrots, fruit, and fresh herbs. I turned around and gave the products to the customer.
“That will be 10 gold francs.” He handed me the coins and went on his way. “Bonne journée- Have a nice day!” He turned around a gave me a smile and a friendly wave. But to my surprise I got a tap on the shoulder. I turned around and saw that it was Prince Gavin Laurent of France.
“Have I seen you before. You look familiar. Perhaps-” I ran. I couldn’t believe I just let him see my face. So I threw a chicken in his face accidentally. I finally hid behind a tree and sat down. My heart was racing. I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins. I looked around the tree and saw that My Lady was yelling at the other servants. The ones who had treated me as their daughter. The ones who had been my mothers all along. It was not good. Not good at all.

I looked up and blinked my eyes. It was barely dawn and the faint sun rays were shining in through the window. I sat up and looked around my room or I guess you could call it the kitchen because that is where I slept. I looked at the fire place and saw that it had burned out. There was a note there and I would assume it was from one of the other maids. Because God knows that the Baroness and her daughters would never wake up this early. I stood up and walked over to the fireplace and picked up the note. It read:
Dear Nicole,
The Baroness would like you to go pick the apples from the apple tree for breakfast this morning. Also several nuts and rocks. But pebbles though. She says that one of the Courtiers in England have a remedy that if you but hot rocks on the back it is soothing. But I thing it is just ludicrous. Any way good day.
Your lady,
Margret.
Ridiculous indeed, I thought.I ran my hand through my dark hair and shook my head. This woman is crazy. I don’t see how my father married her!”I stalked across my room for a few minutes. Walking off my anger. I decided I needed to change and do what My Lady asked of me for today.I went behind my curtain and took off my nightgown. I pulled on my servants dress and put on my apron. I walked out and looked at myself in the mirror. The servants dress wasn’t all that flattering but it did me wonders! The bodice of the gown was patched with gray and dark blue cotton. I guess I didn’t have a small bosom or a huge one either but I filled out the bodice pretty well. The built in corset fit my waist snugly. It was comfortable, nice enough that I could move around and actually breathe, and I could bend over! YES! I had heard that some girls wear corsets they can’t even sit in. Goodness I would hate for that to be me. The skirt went straight down but folded themselves into my curves. In away I almost looked like a Countess! Except for the fact that my face said a different story. My long dark hair was matted against my head. My bright green eyes stood out against my olive skin. My hair also didn’t help.I picked up my brush and brushed out my hair until it was seemingly perfect. It curled at the ends but that was fine. I decided to put my hair into a braid and did so. After I was done, I left the kitchen, walked down the stairs very quietly, and walked out the front door.
