2017.

At the new year's eve, Hiraya found herself drunk in the middle of the bar, dazed and nearly unconscious. Loud music was filling the room... and her head. The dancing colors were playing with her eyes, contributing to her already throbbing headache and dizziness.

It is still a minute before new year, and she was already wasted.

As she looked around, she saw kissing couples, dancing groups of friends, and those who sang along with the loud banger song. While she's alone in her little table, with dozens of beer bottles and almost ten tequila shot glasses. She smiles pitifully, because all these years, she still got nothing, or should she say, no one.

Is it a curse? Or a consequence of her mother's infidelity? Who is she kidding, really. A bastard has no right for love.

She looks at her finger, a red string tied in her pinky. There's inside of her saying that she should follow it, to at least try. But then, what's the point? She's she, the one who is not deserving of a right love.

"5!"

The countdown begins, the music starts getting louder, people start shouting in chorus.

"4!"

As Hiraya feels that everything is moving inconsistently, she grips in her pinky.

"3!"

She pulled the string as hard as she could, trying to break it, trying to make it disappear.

"2!"

She groaned, not from the pain or how difficult it is to pull the string, but because of her heart. The heart that believes that she's undeserving, that someone like her is not worthy enough.

"1!"

She collapses, her back lies on the sofa, eyes fixed on the empty bottles. Weirdly, the half full glass of water starts to be wine red.

"Happy new year!"

Is the string broken? Is she free? Or will she be forever thread bound?

Someone who will continuously look for a needle in a haystack, while dancing against the time and dreams.

The concept of red strings runs over humanity for centuries, constituting a belief that one is destined to find a soulmate or a partner based on fate's liking. However, due to the low rates of possibilities of meeting someone's soulmate tied by a red string, a lot of people lost their beliefs on this. It makes the red strings tied on them weaker as time passes by.

Unwillingness to find their soulmates and losing the faith on the red string loses the tie on their pinky fingers. It will soon resort to early deaths or, if they were lucky enough, growing old alone but half-dead.

Some show the signs of willingness to die alone rather than to force themselves to meet their soulmates without any signs or warnings. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Nevertheless, there were studies and researches stating that people who lose beliefs on red strings will start hearing ringing in their ears randomly. A lot of them thought that they were getting old or maybe it's already fate judging them for losing belief in the red strings. However, the special study conducted in an area somewhere in the Philippines stated that the ear ringing specifically happened to an individual in a specific time and place, leading to a conclusion that this might be another way of meeting someone's soulmate.

For years, professionals have studied this rare phenomenon but have yet to disclose any specific findings.
