I awoke to footsteps approaching the door of our cell.
The lights suddenly turned on, just like every other morning, and I squinted my eyes shut.
"Morning, lazy mutts," the head scientist spat, kicking one of the girl's cells. His name was Ryan, and her name was Meredith.
He walked over to each of our cells and checked his clipboard to see if we were still alive. Not that he would care, though.
He finally walked over to me and smiled. I growled in response.
"And good morning, doll face," he said, revealing his yellow teeth.
I have always disliked that name; it's been my nickname since day one.
Flashback TRIGGER WARNING!!!!
I was outside playing with my mom when they arrived; my mom recognized them right away just by their van.
She told me to run and hide anywhere I could, as far away as possible. I ran into our woods just as my father was running outside.
I heard loud voices while I was running, but I knew I couldn't look back.
After what felt like an eternity, every part of me burned, and I had to sit down behind a tree.
I had just sat down when I turned my head to the side, only to scream and jump back in fear as a massive wolf was growling at me, inches from my face.
A few seconds later, I was being led back to my house with a wolf behind me, forcing me to move along. My six-year-old self was so scared it would attack me, so I complied.
I almost fell to the ground when we went around the side of the house. Both of my parents were on their knees in front of a man who was holding a gun to them. He smiled as soon as he saw me.
"Aha, there she is! Nice job, Maximus!" said the man with the gun.
"M-Mom... Dad?" I nervously asked, hoping they would laugh and tell me this was a joke, but no laughter came from them, and Mom started to cry.
"Is there anything you would like to say to your precious little girl one last time?" he asked my parents.
My dad looked at me first.
"I'm sorry I couldn't protect you, baby. I-i want you to know that I hope you will forgive me, and I love you," he said, breaking down in tears.
I was just about to say that I forgave him, even though I wasn't sure what he needed forgiveness for, when the man with the gun pulled the trigger and shot my dad right in the head...
He slumped over while my mom began to sob hysterically. I froze in place.
My mom managed to look at me through tears.
"I love you, sweetie. Please stay strong for me." Then the man shot her as well, and I collapsed to the ground in horror but I couldn't take my eyes away from their bodies.
"Well, that's over with. Get rid of them!" he yelled, and other men came and grabbed their bodies, throwing them in a van.
He turned and looked at me. "And knock her out; I've got places to be."
He walked away, and I felt a pinch in my neck as someone behind me injected me with something.
I began to drift off when someone flipped me over their shoulder and threw me into a van with my parents faces on my mind still hoping this was a joke or dream...
