Things had... shifted.
Not dramatically, just enough to notice if you were paying attention- and I usually was.
The Weasley twins were still loud, reckless, and constantly one step away from disaster.
That hadn't changed.
What had changed, maybe, was how quickly I looked away when they walked into a room.
It started after the detention incident.
Word had spread- as it always did- and apparently, someone had decided that I'd been helping the twins all along.
The whispers followed me for days: show-off, snake gone soft, attention-seeker.
Normally, I'd let people talk. But this time, the twins noticed first.
Two Ravenclaws cornered me outside the courtyard, talking just loud enough to be heard.
"Guess Slytherins really will work with anyone if it gets them attention."
"Bet they're trying to get in on the twins' jokes now- must be exhausting pretending to have a sense of humor."
I didn't react. Didn't plan to.
But Fred and George appeared before I could even open my mouth.
"Funny," Fred said lightly. "You talk like you've ever had a conversation with Y/N longer than three seconds."
George crossed his arms. "And if you had, you'd know they don't waste time trying to impress anyone."
The Ravenclaws went pale, muttered something about "just kidding," and slipped away.
The twins didn't wait for thanks- didn't even look back to see if I was following. They just walked off, laughing quietly between themselves.
I caught up a few minutes later, mostly out of curiosity.
"You didn't have to do that," I said.
Fred shrugged. "Didn't have to. Wanted to."
George smirked. "Consider it a professional courtesy."
I raised an eyebrow. "Professional?"
"Troublemakers' code," Fred said with a wink. "You're honorary, whether you like it or not."
I didn't answer. Didn't roll my eyes, didn't smile. Just walked past them- though I caught myself listening when they laughed again behind me.
That evening in the Slytherin common room, I couldn't focus.
The words on the page blurred into nothing, my mind replaying that moment in the courtyard.
They'd defended me- without any audience, without anything to gain.
That wasn't the behavior of mindless pranksters.
It was loyalty. Simple, quiet loyalty.
And I wasn't sure what to do with that.
The next morning, as I passed them at breakfast, I slipped a small note between their plates. No flourish, no smile- just one clean line of handwriting.
"Try not to get caught next time. It's pathetic watching you both stammer through excuses."
When I glanced back from the Slytherin table, Fred was grinning like he'd just won something, and George was shaking his head, laughing.
Neither of them said anything.
Neither did I.
But the silence between us didn't feel as sharp anymore.
It just... existed.
Comfortably.
