Cameron Cade first noticed Destiny on a Friday afternoon, the golden hour making the field glow like it was painted just for them. She wasn't loud, she wasn't flashy, but her presence pulled at him in a way he couldn't ignore. Her dark skin caught the sunlight, her ribbons danced as she moved, and the calm confidence she carried made her seem untouchable, yet somehow familiar. When she laughed, soft and real, the world around him—drums, cheering, cleats pounding the turf—fell away.
He saw her again near the vending machines the next day. She was leaning against the wall, fiddling with a bag of chips, brow slightly furrowed in concentration. He stepped casually beside her, tall frame looming but not threatening.
Man, you looking at chips like they owe you money? he teased.
She looked up, startled, then chuckled. And you look like you're about to give me life advice about vending machines.
Maybe I am, he said. Step one, don't overthink the chips. Step two, buy the chips you want. Step three, if you want, let me come with you.
She raised an eyebrow. Step three seems unnecessary.
Nope. That's where the fun comes in. It's about company.
She shook her head, smirking. Company, huh? You bold.
Dedicated, he corrected, brushing near her hand as he reached for the same soda. Dedicated to making sure you smile at least once a day. That's my job.
Her eyes flicked to him, that spark of amusement lighting them. You really think that's your job?
Absolutely. Someone's gotta keep you laughing. Might as well be me.
From that day on, little moments became their routine. Hallway passes with teasing comments, joking about homework, playful challenges about who could get the teacher to call on them less, all threaded with glances and touches that lingered just long enough to matter.
One afternoon after practice, Cameron caught up to her as she gathered her bag. You're always leaving before I can say something, he said, grinning.
She glanced up, amused. Like what?
Like this. He pointed at her, smirk playful. You owe me a laugh.
She shook her head. You're ridiculous.
Maybe, but I'm fun, he said. Don't you like fun?
She laughed, genuine and soft. Yeah, you're fun. You better keep it up though, or I'm canceling our contract.
He feigned shock. Canceling the contract? That's harsh. I think we need a renegotiation meeting.
She shook her head, smiling. Maybe later.

The night of the home game came like a storm. Stadium lights cut through the cool evening air, casting sharp shadows across the turf. Cameron jogged onto the field, adrenaline pumping, teammates tossing a football behind the cheer line. Destiny doing a pyramid stand, ribbons glinting under the lights, eyes scanning the field with that calm, thoughtful intensity he couldn't stop noticing.
Watch it, Cameron shouted as Derek, laughing too hard, spun and threw the ball carelessly. But it was too late. The football slammed into Destiny's temple, and she crumpled instantly.
Destiny! Cameron yelled, racing toward her. His heart pounded, chest tight. Her leg twisted at an unnatural angle, and he froze for a heartbeat. She had broken it. His hands shook as he knelt beside her, brushing dirt from her hair, tracing her face as she groaned softly.
Derek stumbled forward, pale, stammering an apology, but Cameron grabbed him by the jersey, fury boiling over. Do you even know what you just did? You could have killed her! His voice cracked with fear, anger, and heartbreak. She's everything to me!
The team tried to pull him back, but he didn't care. He wasn't letting anyone near her except the paramedics. You hear me, Destiny? he murmured, brushing hair from her forehead. I've got you. I'm not leaving. Not now, not ever.
The ambulance arrived, and Cameron climbed in without hesitation, ignoring the coach's shouts. His hand never left hers, thumb stroking her palm as sirens screamed through the night. Every bump in the road made him flinch, every shallow breath from her stole his own.

At the hospital, Cameron refused to leave her side. He towered over her even on the gurney. She looked so small, so fragile, it nearly broke him. Tears welled in her eyes, and he brushed them away gently, his large hands careful and protective.
I'm here, he murmured. You're safe now. I won't leave. Not ever. You hear me?
She whimpered softly, the sound breaking him further. I'm scared.
I know, he said, pulling her hand to his chest, letting her feel the steady beat of his heart. I know. And it's okay. I've got you. Every second. Every breath.
He gently rubbed her leg where the splint had been placed while his other hand stayed wrapped around hers. When I catch Derek... His jaw clenched, eyes wet, anger and fear swirling together. He's gonna regret it. But right now... right now, it's just you and me. Okay?
She leaned slightly into his warmth, trusting him fully. Okay, she whispered.
Hours passed with him beside her, brushing hair from her face, holding her hand, whispering reassurances. Every tear he wiped, every small groan she made, was a promise. He wouldn't leave.
Finally, exhaustion claimed them both. Destiny's eyelids fell, and she relaxed against him, the tension in her small frame melting into the safety of his presence. Cameron watched her for a moment, brushing hair from her forehead one last time before closing his own eyes. He stayed there through the night, holding her hand, whispering silent promises, and fell asleep beside her, never letting go, never letting her feel alone.
