Hayden woke up before his alarm clock went off — 5:24 a.m. Soft morning light crept through the sheer curtains of their master bedroom. Instinctively, he reached out to the other side of the bed where his wife, Bianca, should have been, but the space was empty, the sheets already cool.
He stretched, turned off the alarm, and made his way into the bathroom connected to their room. The spacious, polished space was filled with soft beige tiles and brushed gold fixtures — modern and warm, just the way Bianca had wanted it. Hayden brushed his teeth in front of the wide mirror, steam beginning to fog the edges, then stepped into the shower. Hot water cascaded down his dark brown skin, waking him fully. After drying off, he ran a brush through his short temple fade, added a hint of cologne, and pulled on a pair of black dress pants with a fitted tank top.
Their house was nothing short of intentional — every detail chosen together. A two-story home with clean lines, four bedrooms in total: one downstairs for guests, and three upstairs, including the master suite with its own bathroom and balcony. Downstairs opened into a living room, kitchen, dining space, a laundry room, and a full bathroom. A cozy office sat near the stairwell for remote workdays. Out back, a shaded veranda overlooked plenty of green space — the kind of yard they'd always imagined children running through, someday.
When Hayden walked into the kitchen, the smell of fresh pancakes greeted him. Bianca stood at the sink rinsing a bowl. He slipped behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. She jumped, then quickly melted into his hold, a soft hum escaping her lips.
"Good morning, darling," she said, tilting her head slightly.
"Good morning, honey," Hayden murmured, kissing her neck.
She turned to face him, a sleepy smile tugging at her lips. Bianca's dark brown skin glowed beneath the warm kitchen lights, her natural braids pulled back neatly to her neck, edges laid smooth. At 5'4", her slim-fit frame carried just enough curve to fill out her grey skirt. Her eyes — still heavy with morning — softened when they landed on him, familiar and full of love.
She kissed him lightly. "Mmm, fresh," she teased.
Hayden chuckled. "I try."
She grinned and pointed to a stack of pancakes. "Eat up before they get cold."
He sat at the kitchen island, and she slid the syrup over to him. They ate in easy silence, the kind that only comes after years of mornings like this, broken now and then by quiet laughter.
"So, excited for the annual trip?" he asked between bites.
"Of course," she said, practically glowing. "I love our cabin trips. I hope we keep them going every year — kayaking, hiking, scary stories, and..." She smirked, leaning closer. "The devil's tango."
Hayden laughed, nearly choking. "I knew that was coming."
After breakfast, he offered to do the dishes while she went upstairs to get ready. Once he finished, he changed into the rest of his outfit — a baby blue dress shirt, black jacket, matching dress pants, and black leather shoes. A gold watch on his wrist completed the look.
"Hayden, are you ready, darling?" Bianca's voice floated down the stairs.
"Yeah, Bianca. Just waiting on you."
And then she appeared. Bianca descended the staircase like it was second nature — her black skirt hugging her hips, red blouse tucked in neatly, the top button left undone. Her black blazer rested over one arm, wedge heels clicking against the steps. Her Gucci handbag dangled from her hand, lips glossed just enough to shine.
Hayden stared, not like a man seeing his wife for the first time, but like one who had never stopped noticing.
"You got everything?" she asked, playful as always.
