NATE'S POV:

Detention.
First day back.
Nothing new.
I'd had the worst summer of my life: lots of hookups, drug selling, getting on probation, and not having the girl I wanted by my side. Ever since Eve and I broke up, nobody knew who we were anymore, I didn't know who I was either.

The library was quiet. The only sound was ticking off the clock, counting down the minutes till I got to go home and see Stan.
Currently, in detention, was good girl Bronwyn Rojas, Princess Adeline Prentis, Jock Cooper Clay, and a gossip boy that everyone hated - Simon Kelleher
Miss Avery was pacing the front, checking her watch. "While we wait for the late one, I want you all to write an essay on why you're here and your reflection." She said, leaning on her desk.
Bronywn, who happened to have an answer for everything, raised her hand.
"Yes?"
"Can I use my laptop? I don't use paper for environmental reasons -" She began, her dark brown curls framing her face.
"Nope, you can use good old pen and paper." Miss Avery said, her lips tight.
"Do you mind if I get my bottle? I left it -" Simon asked, pointing to the door with his thumb.
"Get some water from the tap." Miss Avery sighed, nodding to the fountain in the corner with plastic cups. Simon stood up and walked over to it, himself a drink.
Just then, idiots in a bright red car and nothing but underwear were running around outside. Miss Avery's lips tightened even more of that was even possible as she saw the twats dancing around outside.
"Stay here, I want those essays started by the time I come back." Miss Avery stormed out of the room, down the stairs.
Nobody started the pathetic essay and ran towards the window. "Well that was anticlimactic," Simon says, like the sarcastic little bitch he is.
"Anyone else want some water?" He asked.
"I do," Addy said, slipping back into her seat.
"Get it yourself then princess," he smirked to himself. Addy  slumped in her seat, humiliated.
"What is your problem, dude?" Cooper asked, with a sigh, sitting next to his best friends girlfriend.

"My problem? Hmm, that I'm stuck in a room with people and secrets."
"What are you on about?" Bronwyn asked, shuffling slightly, tapping her fingers slightly on the desk.
"You know what I'm on about, I'm sure of it," Simon smirked, he brought the drink to his lips.
He started coughing.
Then choking.
He wouldn't stop.
"Yo?! Dude?? You good?" The jock asked moving closer, ready to help.
" Ep..Epi...pen.. " he coughed out, dropping the cup, the water spilling all over the floor.
I grabbed Simon's bag and emptied every pocket, every book. No Epipen was in it.
"Cooper! Go to the nurse's office!" I shouted, starting to try do anything I could. Rojas was calling an ambulance. Princess was stood there, not helping one bit. The baseball star ran out the room, nearly running into a blonde girl who was walking in. Without even looking, I knew who it was, and I couldn't afford to be distracted, Simon's life was on the line.
"What the actual fuck is going on here!?" Eve screamed, observing fact Rojas had a phone pressed to her ear, Addy looking like a statue, and me trying to perform CPR as Simon's eyes began to close.
Eve didn't ask another question, She got into the floor next to me, adjusted my hands. "Don't press down too hard," She advised, holding Simon's hand as we watched the life start to drain from his eyes and face.
Cooper ran back in.

"Here wasn't anything in the nurse's office!" Cooper said, out of breath.
"Go and see if the ambulance is here," Bronwyn asked, phone still to her ear.
I glanced up, knowing my efforts were hopeless. She's eyes met mine, thinking the exact same thing. Paramedics burst in. Her green eyes fixed on mine, and I got to see the emeralds that I missed these past months.
They shoved us out the way, and she tripped her feet into me. I caught her by the arm, her face close to mine but she pulled away quickly and followed the medics from the room.
Maybe I'm being delusional, she doesn't miss me.

EVELYN POV:

Watching Simon struggle and gasp for air was horrible. How was Janae and Maeve going to take the fact Simon nearly died? Or is dead.

When I'd stumbled, Nate caught me and I pulled away quickly. In the brief touch, he was as warm as I remember. He still smelt of spice and that cologne I brought him for his birthday at the start of the year. I missed him. I do. But it felt like betrayal when he began selling drugs. Drugs ruined his life. They ruined others life. They ruined mine when I found out.
I followed the paramedics out, pulling my phone from my pocket. I scrolled to Janae's number.

----

I sat on a bench in the parking lot. It was quiet and empty apart from Cooper's jeep, a motorcycle, and teachers' cars that were here and there.  I didn't have a ride since my mum was working, my bike was in for checks at the garage, and my ride had left without me because of me getting detention. I heard the crunching of gravel behind me, but I didn't turn around.
"Shouldn't you be home by now?" A voice asked from behind. The person sat beside me, a motorcycle helmet dangling from his long fingers. Nate's light brown hair was framing his face. God, he was gorgeous.

"Missed my ride," I mumbled. I played with my hair, twirling it round. I'd grown it out a bit over the summer, now past my shoulders.
"Do you want a lift?" He asked, glancing sideways towards me. I checked my phone before answering, Janae hadn't replied, nor Maeve. Simon couldn't give me a ride because he was obviously in hospital.
