Nightmare Aftermath

I hadn't another thought throughout my sleep, which was very lucky. I sure haven't been getting a crap ton of rest lately, much too uptight about everything that happened in the last few months. Looking out the window, I see that the day was as gloomy as it could get during a spring day. The sun was hidden behind the clouds, which were as grey and heavy as I've ever seen them. And it looked like rain might begin pouring down at any second.

"Hey Pony," I hear Sodapop say in his rhaspy morning voice "How did you sleep? There sure was a hell of a lot of screamin' last night" He says as he turn over in the bed to face me.

"Well, Dally and Johnny didn't come back to visit me so I guess it was alright" I mumbled, still adjusting to my morning voice. "These damn dreams are tearing me apart Soda, I don't think I can take it no more" tears began to well up in my eyes.

Well this is just great, its not even breakfast and my eyes are threatening to spill.

"Well, how about this" Soda's eyebrows raise as he props himself up against one elbow "You just tough it out for one more day at school, and then after, you me n Dar will head down to the drive in to talk up some chicks, how about that?" A smile began to spread across my face as I too sat up.

"Thanks Soda, I'll do my best today I promise" I say, still in a dazed and tired state. Sodapop reaches over and pats me on the shoulder before he gets up to what I assume is get ready. ;)

Once I am standing up, I run my hands through my hair. It's oily. But not oily enough for a shower. Clothing was easy, same shirt, same pants and sometimes, I'd like to switch up my jackets to spice it up a little.

As I'm walking towards the bedroom door, I glance at myself in the mirror. I can barely recognize myself anymore - eyes sunken in, irritated skin and most of all, I don't smile the same way that I used to. Looking back at old photographs, my smile was so big and happy, almost like I had no care in the world. But now, my smile has whittled itself down to nothing but a dented line.

After I stop staring at myself like a cat who's seen a ghost, I jump down the stairs - attempting to present myself happily - towards the kitchen where Dar has already finished making breakfast.

He's always been the grownup of our broken family, been so much more than a brother to both me and Soda. I honestly don't even wanna think about what would happen if he wasn't with us.

"Hey there Pony, how was the rest of your night" Darry says, I can see the worry in his eyes.

"Didn't dream one bit. And I'm glad, I never want to have to experience that again" I say with a smile, hoping it will get Dar to drop the subject. Sometimes I just don't wanna talk about these things, they hurt too much.

I glance over at the clock, school starts in half an hour. So, I grab my book bag and start towards the door.

"Hey Pony," Sodapop says as soon as I'm about to open the door, "just a heads up, there's a new kid starting school today. Heard he's a grade higher" he says as he munches on some toast "one hell of a Soc too. Rich parents, all the way from Europe!"

Well that's just great, I don't need another bump in the road today. But I suppose I've been gifted with one anyways.

Still fretting about the new kid as I leave the house, I begin to walk down the street and right as I see the park, I notice the sunrise. Great, just what I needed to start my day off with a bang.
