Rin hadn't meant to come.
He told himself he wouldn't.
Every time he pushed open that hospital door, he swore it'd be the last. That he'd stop torturing himself with the sight of Isagi sitting there, fragile, broken, a reminder of everything Rin failed to protect.
But somehow, his feet kept bringing him back.
The door creaked open. Rin froze in the frame, staring at the boy in the bed. Pale, hollow-eyed. A shadow of who he used to be.
He wanted to say something. Anything. But the words stuck like barbed wire in his throat.
"...You're awake," he muttered, voice dull.
Isagi blinked at him. "...Yeah."
The silence stretched, thick, suffocating. Rin's heart was screaming, Say you're glad he's alive. Say you were terrified of losing him. Say you love him.
But his lips stayed pressed in a thin line.
He sat in the chair, arms crossed tight, pretending it kept him safe. Pretending it kept the feelings from spilling out.
And then—
"...Why do you keep coming?" Isagi's voice broke the air, sharp, pained.
Rin's head jerked up. "What?"
Isagi's words cut like glass. Every syllable stabbed him deeper.
"If you don't care, if you hate me that much—then just leave!"
Rin's stomach twisted. He wanted to shout No. He wanted to grab Isagi, hold him, tell him he was wrong, that Rin cared too much, that he cared so much it destroyed him.
But nothing came out. Nothing.
Isagi kept going. His voice cracked, his body trembling. His words grew rawer, sharper, desperate.
Why do you look at me like I'm nothing? Do you even care I almost died? Is this pity?
Rin's chest caved. He wanted to say You're everything. I cared so much it scared me. I can't breathe when you're not here.
But his tongue felt heavy. His throat locked. He couldn't. He didn't know how.
And then—
"...I can't keep loving someone who doesn't even want to look at me."
Rin's heart shattered. Just broke, in that single instant.
He bit the inside of his cheek hard enough to taste iron, just to stop himself from saying the truth. His hands curled into fists on his knees so he wouldn't reach out, wouldn't beg him to take it back.
Because maybe... maybe Isagi would be better off not knowing. Better off moving on. Better off without him.
The chair screeched against the floor as he stood too fast. The sound made Isagi flinch, cover his face.
Rin wanted to touch him. To uncover his face. To wipe his tears and promise he'd never make him cry again.
But instead, he turned. He walked out.
And when the door shut behind him, Rin leaned against the wall, chest heaving like he'd just run miles. His hands trembled. His vision blurred.
For the first time in years, Rin let the tears fall—silent, unseen.
Because inside that room, the boy who once lit his entire world had just told him he couldn't love him anymore.
And Rin had no one to blame but himself.
