The rain had been falling for hours. It clung to the windows in long, trembling streaks, each drop catching the dim light of Rin's apartment before sliding away into nothing.
Isagi sat on the couch, hair damp from the walk over. He'd come to return a hoodie Rin had lent him last week—said it "smelled like him" in a way that made Rin's heart pound before he could stop it.
They were quiet. The TV was on but muted, throwing soft flickers across Isagi's face. He was leaning back, legs folded underneath him, scrolling absently on his phone.
Rin couldn't look away.
Every line of his face, every shift of his expression—it was muscle memory to him. He'd memorized it all long before either of them knew what it meant.
And then—
"Hey," Isagi murmured without looking up, "pass me the remote, Rin-chan."
Rin froze.
That name. He hadn't heard it in months.
It slipped from Isagi's lips so easily, like it belonged there, like it used to belong there. Rin's breath caught in his throat, hope flaring so violently it almost hurt.
He passed the remote slowly, fingers brushing against Isagi's.
For a moment, Isagi didn't move. His gaze flicked up, meeting Rin's in the low light, something flickering there—something familiar.
But then it was gone.
Isagi blinked, brow furrowing. "Sorry... did I just call you something weird? That was... uh, random." He laughed softly, awkward, rubbing the back of his neck. "Guess I'm tired."
The knife twisted.
Rin forced a small smile. "Yeah. Guess so."
They watched in silence until Isagi stood, stretching. "I should head home. It's late."
"Right," Rin murmured. His voice barely worked.
The moment the door shut, Rin didn't move. He sat there, every muscle locked, replaying that split second—how it had felt like the world was tipping back into place—before it all crumbled again.
His chest burned. His throat ached. And when the first tear slipped free, he didn't stop it. He didn't stop any of them.
He pressed a shaking hand to his mouth, trying to hold in the sobs, but it was useless. They ripped out of him in broken, uneven gasps, the kind that left him trembling long after the sound faded.
"You almost came back to me," he whispered into the dark.
But the only answer was the rain against the glass.
