I sat on the warm beach feeling the sun on my skin. My toes dug deep into the sand and I felt completely relaxed. I looked out at the lake and listened to the boats out so far away they looked like specks. My bathing suit was wet and so I sat on a towel to dry off. But after running in and out of the water it was now so damp it did no good to dry off with.

“Lela!” I turned to see Allison run over. “Are you coming? Jack and Ben are waiting?”

“Uh, tell them I’m sick.”

“But why? Your not ill are you?!”

“No, I’m just not in the mood for boys.” Jack and Ben were two nearby campers that had taken an interest in Allison. There weren’t really my type so I didn’t show any notice in them so they didn’t really seem to notice me. I was ok with that. I didn’t want any more drama from the male species.

“Not in the mood for boys?!? You must be sick?!” She reached out a hand and felt my forehead. I laughed and pushed her away.

“Go ahead, they like you and their just your type.”

She looked back at them then back at me, “I’ll be back in time for hot dogs.” I nodded and watched as she ran back down the beach toward the two blonde boys.

I sat on the beach for thirty more minutes before getting up and going back to the camp site.

The first thing I saw was Matt sitting on a beach chair tanning with his IPod plugged in and turned up so loud I could hear a faint guitar solo playing.

His and Allison’s parents rented a cabin on the other side of the woods. They always did that when they wanted “Alone time”. They used to leave Allison and Matt at home but when Matt through a party one year they now forced them to come and said it was a family vacation, even though they spent absolutely no time together.

I noticed how pale Matt was and he didn’t usual tan and I guessed he was trying to be more like Tyler Radisson who was like a bronze skinned god.

I went into the tent and grabbed my phone “No signal”. I went back outside and started moving around holding up my phone in the air.

“You won’t get anything out here.” I turned to see Matt standing up and getting a can of pop from the cooler.

“That’s exactly what I was going to say about your tan.” His face flustered.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean your skin won’t tan.”

“Why not?”

“Well for starters you don’t have any tanning lotion, you put sunscreen on, you have a t-shirt on, and well your chair is in the shade.” I didn’t need to see his embarrassed face instead I turned and went back to what I was doing.

“Wow.” I heard him say, “You are just…”

I swung back around, “I’m just what?”

“Unbelievable is a word I should use!”

“How?”

“Your mom works full time and your dad left you when you were ten. Ever since then you’ve been trying to find love by getting into peoples pants and by shopping until you’ve bought everything in the store! It’s pathetic” I felt a flare of truthful pain in my stomach. But when I got hurt, I got angry.

“You think I’m pathetic?” I stomped toward him, “You’re the one who can’t get over your ex! She took your V-card and left you! Most guys would be ecstatic about that! But what do you do? Sit here and try to turn yourself into some model. Well, guess what it doesn’t matter if you look like a Greek god, she still will not want you!”
