THE BEGINNING

The clock ticked too loud.

Beomgyu sat slouched by the window, one arm folded on the desk, his chin resting on it. The afternoon light filtered through the dirty glass, falling in fractured rectangles across the floor. Outside, birds fluttered on the courtyard tree, pecking at crumbs some juniors left behind.

Inside, the air was heavy.

The teacher droned on at the front of the class, voice as flat as the chalk screeching against the board. Somewhere in the room, a pencil dropped. A chair creaked.

Beomgyu's pen rolled under his fingers. His notebook lay open, its pages blank except for a single ink blot that had bled into a black star.

His eyes flicked to the clock again. Five minutes crawled past.

"Choi Beomgyu."

His head jerked up. The teacher's eyes were on him...sharp, disapproving.

"Page 3419. Read aloud."

Beomgyu blinked. His textbook was open, but the words  were all blur and twisted. He opened his mouth to speak.

But a sound cut him off.

A scream.

Shrill, piercing, slicing through the air like a knife.

The classroom froze.

_____

Two classrooms down, Yeonjun's pen tapped a soft rhythm on his notebook.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

It was almost soothing.

Until the scream shattered it.

He didn't flinch. Didn't even look up as chairs scraped against the floor and students whispered in rising panic.

"What was that?"

"Did someone get hurt?"

Another scream echoed, closer this time. Yeonjun sighed and finally lifted his gaze.

Through the open door, he caught a glimpse of chaos. A girl ran past, clutching her bag like a lifeline. A teacher stumbled after her, face pale as chalk.

The air felt...charged. Like the moment before a storm.

His jaw tightened as he watched their teacher herd the students out of the room, probably to the gym.

But his mind wasn't on the commotion.

It was on Beomgyu.

_____

The hallway was thick with heat and bodies. Students pressed shoulder-to-shoulder, their voices rising and crashing like waves.

"Everyone to the gym! Now!"

A teacher herded them forward with frantic gestures. Beomgyu moved with the crowd, his limbs stiff, ears ringing.

"It's suicide." someone whispered behind him.

"No...it's murder. They said there's blood everywhere."

"Who was it?"

The answer dropped like a stone.

"Kang Hyunjoo."

The name lodged in Beomgyu's throat.
