Back at the boys' house, we all drag ourselves inside like we've just returned from a weeklong journey, not an afternoon of skipping school.
"I'm never eating again," Madi declares, dropping the flamingo in the entryway like it betrayed her. "Someone peel me off the floor in twenty minutes."
"No one told you to eat all twelve deep-fried Oreos," Chris says, flopping dramatically onto the couch.
"They were mini," she groans.
Matt and I kick our shoes off by the door. He offers me his hoodie again without a word and I take it, slipping it on like it's instinct. It smells like him and funnel cake.
We all end up in the living room again, blankets tossed around, legs tangled. Someone puts on a movie, but no one's really watching. Chris falls asleep first, curled sideways, facing Madi with a throw pillow over his face. Nick claims he's "just resting his eyes," but he's snoring five minutes in. Madi stretches out across the couch, her head in my lap. I can't fall asleep, I have to be home before curfew. But it's only eight o'clock, so I'm gonna let Madi sleep, and I get extra time with Matt.
Matt settles beside me. We talk about everything under the sun, his opinions on music albums, my opinions on books, and he actually listens. He stares at me quietly, with a cute grin on his face, and gives his opinions when necessary, he makes me feels so seen. Every once in a while, I feel his hand brush against mine again. I think about grabbing it. I think about what it means if I do. But before i can think to long he interlaces are fingers and pulls me closer.
The movie keeps playing. I feel my eyes starting to close.
Then, without meaning to, I lean sideways.
And fall asleep on his shoulder.
