Josie's pov୨ৎ:
We tumble into the coffee shop like we've just survived something. Technically, we did, oversleeping, a mad rush to get dressed, and Nick loudly narrating everyone's morning breath.
The barista looks vaguely alarmed until Matt flashes his charming smile and orders a round of drinks for all of us. I slip beside Madi, rubbing my eyes and yawning.
"I swear if school tries to expect anything from me today, I'm walking out," I mutter.
"You mean like... walking out and going to the fair?" Chris says, pointing toward a bright orange flyer taped to the corkboard by the door.
All of us turn.
County Fair This Weekend!
Starts TODAY! Rides, food, music, and games.
Gates open at 10am.
Nick gasps like he just discovered fire. "We're already skipping half the day..."
Matt raises an eyebrow, grinning. "You're suggesting we skip the rest?"
Chris shrugs. "For educational purposes. Like... experiencing the community."
Madi spins around, her braid whipping me in the face. "Wait, can we actually go?"
Matt pulls out his phone. "Let me text my mom."
Before anyone can argue, he's already typing. A minute later, his phone buzzes and he holds it up like it's a golden ticket.
"She says, and I quote 'Sure, just take your siblings with you, watch Josie and Madi, make sure Josie asks her dad and Madi asks her parents, and don't get arrested.'"
"Marylou is the blueprint," I say, laughing.
"Okay but wait," Madi says, suddenly serious. "Josie and I still have to ask for permission."
We both step aside, dialing at the same time. Madi walks to the corner with her phone to her ear, already pleading.
My dad picks up on the third ring.
"What's wrong?" he says immediately, always assuming the worst.
"Nothing's wrong," I say quickly. "I just wanted to ask if I could go to the county fair today instead of school. We kind of had a rough night, and we're already super late, so..."
He sighs. I can practically hear him staring at his never-ending pile of work emails. "Josie you skipped three times this week."
"I know, I know. This will be the last time. I'm not alone, I have Madi and Matt, Chris and Nick. I'm gonna be safe, I'll call you every hour, please, Dad!" I say pleading
"Fine, but this is your last chance to have this freedom you want so bad, dont mess this up. Every hour, I expect a call. You have to come home today, ten oclock curfew, do not be late or consequences will be made. And don't get into trouble."
"I won't. Thanks, Dad. Love yo—"
He hangs up without another word. Classic.
Madi walks back with a giant smile and two thumbs up. "I'm free!"
I put back on my smile not letting anyone see it drop. "Me too."
Nick claps his hands. "Let's go get nauseous on fair rides and eat so much we throw up!" Matt chuckles and bumps my shoulder as we head for the door, iced coffees in hand. "You ready?"
