It was a quiet evening and the sky was dim, the faint color of orange faded after the sun slept. A small convenience store sat tucked at the corner of the street, its flickering sign buzzing softly in the calm new night. Inside, the shelves were half stocked, the air smelled faintly of instant noodles and cold drinks, A soft breeze stirred the plastic flaps at the entrance.
The door slid open with a soft chime.
A figure stepped inside, head hung low, face shadowed beneath a black hoodie. His long coat swayed quietly against the air, soaked faintly at the hem from the streets outside. Without a word, he moved to the counter.
"One instant noodles" he said, voice low and smooth "and coffee. Black."
The clerk nodded, barely glancing up. In this part of the city, strangers passing through in the night weren't uncommon.
As he waited, Shadow’s eyes drifted toward the small dining area.
There, seated alone under the dull glow of a flickering fluorescent light, was a blue hedgehog. Hoodie half-zipped, legs stretched out comfortably, and in front of him, six empty chili dogs on a plate, with a seventh halfway gone.
It was a messy sight, honestly.
Unfamiliar. Civilian. Not his problem.
Shadow turned his gaze away, uninterested, as the clerk set his order on the counter.
Shadow took his tray and made his way to the nearest empty seat. Which, unfortunately, happened to be right beside the chili-stained blue hedgehog.
He didn’t say a word as he sat down. Just unwrapped the lid of his noodles, stirred in the seasoning, and sipped his black coffee in silence.
The quiet stretched…until Sonic glanced over.
Out of boredom more than curiosity, his eyes lingered on the silent figure beside him. A black hoodie. Serious posture. Coffee and instant noodles, real screams “don’t.talk.to.me” energy.
Which, naturally, only made Sonic more interested.
"..You always eat like that?" he asked, breaking the silence, a half-smile forming as he took another bite of his chili dog.
Shadow didn’t look up at first. He kept eating, as if he hadn’t heard the question.
Sonic leaned in a little, tapping his fingers against the table "You one of those serious types? You look like one. Real broody. With too much coffee beans"
He made a brief glance into Shadow's plastic bag unexpectedly full of coffee beans..
A small pause.
"…Or maybe you're just shy." Sonic added with a teasing grin.
Still silence.
"All right. I get it. You’re too cool for me," he said, flipping a hand in mock dismissal. "Mister Dark And Broody’s got Important Places To Be after slumming it in a conbini with chili freaks like me."
The fork paused again. Shadow exhaled quietly through his nose.
"You talk too much," he said.
The voice was low. Smooth. Razor tucked in velvet.
Sonic blinked.
"Excuse me?"
"You’re loud. Annoying. And your breath reeks of mustard swamp."
A slow beat of silence dropped between them like a brick.
Sonic sat up straight, chili dog forgotten, brows lifting in a mix of disbelief and wounded pride.
"Wow. Okay. First of all, I didn’t ask for a Yelp review of my breath. Second of all, you could’ve just said ‘not in the mood,’ but noooo, gotta hit me with the emotional damage."
Shadow sipped his coffee.
"You assumed I wanted to talk."
Sonic's eyes narrowed. "I was being nice, dude. Ever heard of it?"
"I didn’t ask for that, either."
"Wow. Okay, fine." He shoved the final chili dog aside, a cup of tea sloshing dangerously close to the table’s surface. "Guess I got the hint."
"Tch. Annoying," he muttered.
Sonic’s grin faltered. "Okay. Way to be rude."
"You approached me," Shadow pointed out flatly.
"Well, excuse me for being friendly," Sonic snapped, crossing his arms. "Not everyone enjoys sitting in silence, drinking bitter coffee and sulking in public."
"You don’t know anything about me."
"Didn’t have to," Sonic huffed, "But thanks for the reminder. No wonder nobody likes you."
He stood up, grabbing his jacket in a huff. "Have fun being a lone wolf weirdo."
With that, Sonic stormed out of the store, the door chime echoing behind him as he vanished into the night.
Shadow sat still, sipping his coffee, eyes following the now empty spot across from him.
The quiet returned once Sonic left, leaving only the hum of the fridge and the steam rising from Shadow’s noodles.
Then came a buzz from his pocket.
He fished out his phone, unlocking it with a glance. A message from Rouge lit up the screen.
Rouge: "You better not be out eating junk again. You’ve got rehearsal tomorrow, don’t ruin your voice."
Shadow rolled his eyes, typing back with one hand:
Shadow: "Calm down. It’s just coffee and noodles."
Another buzz.
Rouge: "Still. You're not bulletproof, superstar."
He smirked faintly, shaking his head. She always found a way to keep tabs on him.
As he backed out of the chat, another notification appeared, this time from his public social media.
Just a simple fan comment under his latest photo post.
@scarletsapphire32: "Even in a mask, you still look cool 🖤✨"
Shadow’s eyes lingered on the screen.
Thousands of likes, Hundreds of comments. The familiar flood of adoration and attention he never asked for but couldn’t escape. He scrolled absently through a few more, the usual praise, emojis, heart reactions.
He smirked.
"…Nobody likes me, huh?"
His tone was dry, amused even, as that blue stranger’s words replayed in his head.
Nobody likes you.
It shouldn’t have stuck with him. But it did.
Weird kid.
