Chapter 23 - First Date
As I stared in awe at my suitcase filled with clothes, I wondered why I had ever complained that I didn't have anything to wear. I had everything a teenage girl needed. I must have just been a selfish thirteen year old brat. How did my mum put up with me?
Mairead stood unpatiently tapping her foot on the hard floorboard, as she inspected her fingernail as if it was the most interesting thing she had ever seen. I had called her over an hour after Niall asked my on the date. I think I might have made her go deaf though, because all I did was scream down the phone for ten minutes until I reached the hotel I was staying in.
"Have you chosen yet?" She asks, making it sound more like an instruction than a quesiton.
"No." I frowned.
"But you have so many clothes!" She groaned, dragging the "so".
"I know... but they're either too small, too big, or too girly!" I complained.
See what I mean? I'm still selfish.
"C'mon. There has to be something in there."
Mairead appears beside me, and crouches down onto her knees. She inspects the clothes as if she's sherlock, and bites her lip. Suddenly, she springs to life, her eyes lightening up and her pupils widening. She jumps up to her feet, and starts jumping up and down, pointing at the suitcase, her mouth oppening and closing. I tried holding in my laugh, but it was impossible. She just looked so funny she had no idea!
"You okay there Mai?" I say inbetween laughter. There's even tears in my eyes.
"I - I - how could you say there was nothing perfect, when there was one right in front of you?!" She squeals, picking up a dress and litterly shoving it in my face.
At first, I couldn't even see the dress, since Mairead was holding it so close. But when she moved it back a little, I could see it clearly. And I'm not going to lie, it was beautiful. It was a one shoulder dress, and I wasn't normally a big fan of them. But this one would change anyones mind. It was the most gorgeous shade of purple, and had a black belt sitting under the chest area. The dress went down to knees length. The one shoulder was made up of many fake diamonds. It made me think, how long did the people making the dress take on putting all those diamonds together? Must have taken ages. I could never do that. I wouldn't have the patience.
Once I tried on the dress and stood in front of the mirror posing, I knew it was the right choice. If I say so myself, it looked quite good. This was the first time in years I could ever feel good about myself. About the way I looked, and the way I felt.
"It's perfect." I whispered to no one, even though I knew Mairead was in the room.
"I told you." She smiled, appearing in the mirror beside me.
"Mairead?" I said in a quiet voice.
She brushed a stray hair from my face and tucked it behind my ear. "Yeah?" She said softly.
"Do you think Niall likes me?"
To my surprise, she laughed. Hard. I didn't know wether she was being rude, or what, so I just stared at her in curiousity until she stopped. Which was like five minutes later.
"What's so funny?" I asked.
"Oh god, Erin! Are you being serious?" She took deep breaths to calm herself down.
I nodded. "As serious as I'll ever be." I mumbled.
"In that case... are you blind?!"
"Excuse me?"
