The Scars You Leave
Chapter one - The armor that cracked

Tim Bradford had always been the 'rock'.

The unshakable presence in the chaos. The guy who ran toward gunfire without hesitation. Steady. Brave. Dependable to a fault. People leaned on him because they believed he could take it—because he always did.
But not tonight.
The station was quieter than usual. Not silent, but a kind of calm that had settled after chaos reigned over the day. The overhead lights buzzed in Tim Bradfords ears as he sat alone at his desk, flicking his pen in his hands, a report of today's traffic stop half-finished in front of him.

Normally, he'd admire the quiet. He lived in it. Breathed in it like oxygen. It was safe—controlled. But tonight? It scraped at his nerves like sandpaper. He flexed his fingers over the paper and stopped. The words were blurring, his usually steady hands trembled so subtly no one would've noticed. But he noticed—he always noticed.

"Bradford?"

Lucy's voice soft behind him, concern threaded through it.

He didn't look up.

"Thought you left." He muttered, his voice tighter than he intended.

"I almost did." She stepped into his office. Not close, not far—like she knew he needed space, but a friend to lean on.

That was the thing about Lucy Chen. She knew things. Saw past the walls he put up for everyone else.

He inhaled, his fingers hovering over the report. He blinked at the paper, forcing the words into place, waiting for his heartbeat to slow, but it didn't.

His chest tightened.

Not just stress. Not just a bad day.

He knew the difference. He trained rookies to recognize the signs. But knowing and feeling were two different things. Lucy leaned against the doorway, jacket clutched in her hands. She hadn't meant to stay this long. She told herself it would be ten minutes. Drop off the things he left behind at her apartment, and move on. But there he was, sitting in the edge of the chair, his nails dug into his palm, chest rising frantically.

"Tim?" She asked cautiously, stepping forward.

He didn't face her, he couldn't.

"Tim." She repeated.

His hands were trembling.

That's when she saw him, the tremor in his hands, the way his eyes wouldn't focus. Not on her, not on anything. He was somewhere else.

Lucy didn't need training to recognize a panic attack. She'd had her share. But seeing the look on his face, on him. Her anchor, the man who had always stood like nothing could ever touch him. It hit her in a way she could never be prepared for. She knelt down cautiously, like getting close to him might shatter him.

"It's okay," she whispered. "You're safe, you're with me."

His breaths were shallow, frantic, stuck in his throat.

"He did this." Tim said suddenly, his voice strangled. "My dad. He'd scream, and freeze. Couldn't move, couldn't breathe.

Lucy's heart shattered.

"He'd scream like I was this...this disgrace. I was ten and he looked at me like I was already a failure. And I believed him." He laughed bitterly. "God, sometimes I still believe him." He looked up at her then, eyes glassy, breath frantic. And just like that, the walls he'd built, the ones she'd faced at least a hundred times, were crumbling down.

"I saw a dad yell at his kid at a stop today." He said, his voice shaking. "I—I thought I was past this." He admitted. "But seeing that kid..."

"You're human, Tim." she said. "It doesn't go away, but it does get easier."

He looked at her, really looked. Her eyes weren't full of pity, just understanding. "I should've stopped him." He muttered. "You did. You froze because you care," Lucy said. "That's not weakness. That's trauma. And you're working through it. You're not that scared little kid anymore."

He nodded slowly. Still shaky, but present now. The tremors in his hands had slowed, his shoulders no longer rising and falling in panic but tired in surrender. Lucy stayed close, her fingers interlacing gently with his.

"I've got you." she whispered, her voice low and gentle. "You're okay, just breathe." He closed his eyes, following her breaths, holding on to the sound of her voice like it was the only thing in the world. Minutes passed before he finally opened his eyes again.

"I'm sorry." he murmured hoarsely. "You shouldn't have seen that."

"Don't apologize." Lucy said, shaking her head. "You don't have to hide how you feel, not from me."

He stared into her eyes, as if looking at her for the first time. He opened his mouth, pausing as the words got caught in his chest. Suddenly:

"Stay..?"
