The forest had no name. Not really.

To anyone who knew Tokyo, Aokigahara was just the dark, endless stretch of trees that loomed at the base of Mount Fuji — a place spoken of in whispers, like a secret too heavy to carry aloud. A place where the air was thick with stillness, so dense it pressed against your skin like a cold, wet cloth. A place where footsteps fell silent, swallowed whole by the mossy earth and tangled roots.

They said it was cursed. Haunted. A final refuge for those who sought to escape the world's relentless weight.

But to Marin, it was something else entirely.

She had stared at the map pinned above her desk for weeks, tracing the thin black lines that led to the heart of the forest. Her fingers trembled slightly—not from fear, but something deeper, something like recognition. Like the forest had been waiting for her, waiting to tell her a story no one else could hear.

No one saw the drawings she kept hidden beneath her mattress — sketches of twisted trees with faces, shadows with eyes that followed her in daylight. Faces melting into bark. Silent mouths cracked open, whispering words she could almost understand. Words she wished she didn't.

The last message she sent to her friends was simple.

"I'm going somewhere I have to go. If I don't come back... look for me there."

Aokigahara.

Now, three weeks later, the forest swallowed her whole. No trail. No trace.

Only silence.

The rumors began immediately.

That she had fallen victim to the forest's dark hunger. That she was now one of its voices, calling from the shadows. That if you listened carefully, you could hear her laughter beneath the wind, thin and broken like dry leaves scraping over stone.

But the truth wasn't so simple.

Her friends knew it.

Because in every silence, there was a whisper.

A promise.

And in every promise, a shadow waits to be followed.

Outside the city, the highway curved beneath the pale light of a half-hidden moon. Sora Arai sat behind the wheel of her father's old sedan, hands tight on the steering wheel. She stared ahead, watching the black silhouette of trees grow taller and darker.

The radio was off.

No music.

Only the low hum of the engine and the night's heavy breath.

Beside her, Kaito Watanabe pulled a crumpled paper from his jacket pocket — Marin's last message, printed and stained with smudged ink.

Sora's lips moved silently, reading the words she wished she could erase.

"I'm going somewhere I have to go. If I don't come back... look for me there."

Kaito's eyes flicked to her.

"We shouldn't be doing this," he whispered. "The forest... it's not just trees and shadows. It's something else."

Sora swallowed the lump rising in her throat.

"Then we'll find out what," she said.

Because no matter what waited beneath those twisted branches, they were the only ones left who cared.

The only ones who could bring her back.

Deep inside the forest, the wind stirred in patterns that seemed deliberate, almost ... knowing. Leaves rustled like a language spoken in a half-remembered dream. Somewhere, a bird called out once, then fell silent.

And in the endless sea of green, something watched.

Waiting.
