stupor - as in daze

The city shone brighter than ever tonight.

Its dazzling lights greeted me in a flash while the loud music from the radio blasted my head like a drum.

I rolled down the window and let the cold air hit me. I took a deep breath and a faint smile caught my lips.

The hectic streets of Seoul were irresistible — exploring them was something that hadn't stopped buzzing in my head since we arrived.

I need something like this. Something new, where I can start over.

"Honey, we're on Auntie's street," my mom emphasized as she turned to look at me. "Please, listen to her and don't give her any worries." She told me as her eyebrows furrowed.

I exhaled softly. "I won't, don't worry." I reassured. She replied with a weak smile and turned back to the front.

I didn't mean to cause any trouble anyway. Well, maybe a late-night stroll without her knowledge. But it's no big deal, and what she doesn't know won't hurt her.

We soon pulled up on my aunt's porch and the moment the car engine turned off, I jumped out.

Half my body was numb. Gosh, I HATE long car rides.

When my dad opened the trunk, I heard the door creak open. I turned and saw my aunt, half asleep, coming out of the house in her hello kitty pajamas.

"Auntie Jihyeee!" I beamed and ran into her arms.

You have no idea how much I love her. She was only 5 years older than me, so in my eyes she was more like a sister than an aunt. And when we were kids, we did everything together.

And when I say everything, I mean literally EVERYTHING

From the cardboard boxes my mom would bring from the store, we would make mini kitchens and Barbie houses. Countless sleepovers would pass with us making a tent out of blankets in the middle of the room, and then we would act out stories to each other with stuffed animals.

There wasn't a thing we didn't know about each other. Crushes, school trouble, even our favorite monster high character.

But by the time I turned 14, she had graduated from high school. Which meant she had to go to college, so she had to get a job to pay rent, which meant...

more responsibilities on her back.

So we didn't talk as often as we used to. But we made a promise to call at least once a week. Which would usually pass with her teaching me stuff she learnt in college that day or me just yapping about drama happening in school.

"Reumi! I missed you so much!" She exaggerated and wiped a fake tear.

"Sorry to interrupt your moment, but these suitcases won't come out on their own miss Areum" My mom scolded, pulling me from aunt.

I exhaled deeply and went to my dad who was about to take the suitcases out.

"You don't have to worry about it, Dad, I'll take them out, they're my suitcases after all." I reassured him and patted him on the back.

"I wouldn't mind, but if that's what you want, go ahead." He said while throwing up his hands in defeat. He went to greet Jihye. They had a great sibling bond, even though they were 17 years apart in age. Watching them quarrel was definitely the most hilarious thing ever.

I pulled out the suitcases and dragged them into the house. "Come on, get inside. You must be dead tired." Auntie yawned and let us into the house. "Reumi, you can leave the suitcases here. We'll drag them to your room tomorrow." She assured me, to which I nodded gratefully.

I think I would have died dragging them to the room.

Auntie led Mom and Dad to the guest room which will be my room, while I spent the night in her room. "Would you mind if we shared a room for one night? Or are you tired of our sleepovers?" She joked. "Never. Now, let's go to sleep." I replied and turned the light off, pulling the blanket over myself.

Hours passed, but I was still awake.

Aunt kept clinging to me, so I took my pillow and lay down on the floor. Miraculously, I fell asleep there in the blink of an eye.

Morning greeted me with my aunt lying on top of me. HOW DID SHE GET HERE?! "Auntie!" I whispered yelled as I pushed her off me. "Yes...?" she muttered. "It's morning, get up." I said as I stood up. "Really? Can I have five more minutes?" she groaned as she tugged on my pillow.

"You can, but I would advise you to get up right away since we have a lot of work to do around my room." She groaned and sat up.

A confused look crossed her face.

"Why am I on the floor...?" She raised an eyebrow and looked at me.

"Don't look at me, I got down there myself last night because you kept sticking to me, and how you ended up here I have no idea." I shrugged.

We went downstairs, made coffee, and fried some eggs and ham for breakfast. When we were done, we sat down at the dining table.

"So, have you thought about how you're gonna decorate your room?" Aunt questioned as she sipped her coffee.

Honestly,

I haven't. Decorating my room was the last thing on my mind.

"Well, not really. But it would be cool if we decorated it together?" I suggested.

She thought for a second. "It would be...but you gotta promise me one thing." She looked at me dead serious.

Oh, no.

I tilted my head. "What?"

"You have to promise me...

that you'll watch the Monster High marathon with me! We were supposed to do it like 6 years ago!" She exaggerated, pointing a finger at me.

She had to be serious.

I burst out laughing. "Sure, are you up for tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow it is." She nodded.
