Chapter 1

“Carrie! Did you see the new guy?” Zoey asked. I shook my head.

“There’s a new guy?” I asked back. She rolled her eyes.

“Yeah. He’s supposed to be this complete genius. The teachers have already fallen in love him. Not literally really because that would be illegal.” She added. It was my turn to roll my eyes. It was typical Zoey.

“It’s not even home period yet, Zo. How could the teachers already love him?” I challenged.

“Because he came in early to get situated here and introduced himself to the teachers.” She explained.

“And how exactly do you know this?”

“I was at my locker and Mrs. Sweeney was talking to another teach about how ‘well mannered and considerate he was’.” She said in an imitation of Mrs. Sweeney.  I smiled at her accuracy.

“What’s his name?” I asked while walking to my locker.

“Kyle Sammuels.” She answered. I nodded and retrieved my books for math and art.

“I’ll see you at English Zo. Later hun.” We hugged and parted ways to homeroom. Homeroom consisted of preps. Usually, I don’t dislike people in a certain group but all of the preps were mean. So I always dreaded going to homeroom.

I walked in and sat in my usual seat in the back of the class. I learned that if I sat in the back at homeroom, I wouldn’t get anywhere near as many glares if I sat in the front or middle. Mrs. Sweeney walked in and smiled when she saw me.

“Carrie, will you do me a favor?” she asked while fumbling with papers on her desk.

“Sure Mrs. Sweeney. What can I do for you?” She looked up and smiled.

“I understand that the new student, Kyle Sammuels has all of his classes with you, I was hoping if you would show his around, be his friend. I hope you don’t mind. You’re my most reliable student.” I nodded and smiled.

“I don’t mind. I’d be glad to do it.” She smiled back.

“Thank you, Carrie.” At that moment, the bell rang and all the preps along with a face I never saw before came filling in the door. His dark raven wing hair hung over his forehead covering his left eye. He walked over to the back of the class and sat in the seat next to me. He had this emo kind of look going and it suited him well. I was about to say hello before Mrs. Sweeney started to take attendance. Afterwards she dismissed us.

“Hi, I’m Carrie. Mrs. Sweeney asked me to be your guide. I hope that’s alright.” I said as we both got up and smiled. He smiled back.

“That sounds good. I’m Kyle. Kyle Samuels.” He said with and extended his hand out towards me. I took it mine and we shook.

“We have math for the next class. It’s down the hall.” I said while putting my bag on my shoulder. It was black with a simple white flower flowing out in a swirly design. Kyle’s bag was a plain black, messenger bag with buttons of different bands on it.

“I know you do art, since we have the same classes. What field do you specialize in?” I asked.

“Painting, usually. What about you?”

“I’m mostly a sketcher. I just can’t seem to make my brush strokes look right. It always ends up looking like a kindergartener made it.” I said laughing at myself. He smiled.

“It just takes practice and patience.”

“Patience is not one of my virtues.” I retorted. He laughed and I couldn’t help but join in. We walked a little further, me ignoring the usual stares I get but I guess Kyle wasn’t used to it.
