For the first time in what felt like forever, there was silence.

No riddles.
No blood.
No whispers crawling up our spines.
Just silence.

The walls had stopped moving.
The lights had stopped flickering.
And the room we’d entered… looked normal.

Like really normal.

Four plain walls.
White paint.
Even a window, covered with dust.
A single door that wasn’t locked.
I could hear my own heartbeat slow down.

We stood frozen, as if we’d walk into a trap just by exhaling.

But nothing happened.

Koel was the first to speak. “Is it… over?”

Varun gave a hollow laugh. “Maybe we passed. The last sacrifice was… enough?”

I didn’t want to say it aloud, but… it did feel like the end.

Even Karan loosened his grip on my hand. He wasn’t tense anymore. His eyes still scanned the room, but they weren’t wild like before. They were… tired.

We all were.

“I don’t trust it,” Karan said. “But… if this is peace, even fake one—I’ll take it.”

We found a small bench in the corner. For the first time, we sat. Not collapsed. Not thrown. Sat.

I closed my eyes for a second.
I thought of Sid.
Of Faizi.
Of Aneesh.

Of their voices, laughs, and flaws.

“They’d want us to breathe,” I whispered.

Nobody answered.
But nobody disagreed.

The silence stretched.
And that’s when it started again.

A low beep.

Just one.
But it echoed like a scream.

I opened my eyes.
A screen had lit up in the center of the room.

> TASK 5: COUNTDOWN ROOM
Answer the question correctly. One wrong move, one body drops.
You have 4 chances. One for each of you.

And below that…

> TIME REMAINING: 04:00:00

Hope died in my chest.
I felt it — the second it left me.
Like something invisible inside me… snapped.

Then in bold, red letters:

> “QUESTION 1: WHAT WAS THE FIRST LIE YOU TOLD TO YOUR FRIENDS?”

Karan read it out loud.

We all stared. No one moved.

“What the f*ck kind of question is that?” Varun said, pacing, voice sharp.

“It’s personal,” I said. “The room wants us to confess.”

“Like a truth task,” Koel whispered. “But... lethal.”

Karan clenched his fists. “We all get one chance. Four people. Four lives.”

“And one wrong answer… someone dies?” I asked, my voice breaking at the end.

“Yep,” Varun muttered. “So basically, we’re f*cked.”

The screen blinked again. A name popped up.

> Player: Koel
Time to answer: 01:00 min

Koel froze.

Her face went pale. “Why me first?”

“No time to argue,” I said quickly. “Koel. Focus. The first lie you told us. Go back. Think.”

She swallowed, shaking. “Okay. Um. Um... maybe... maybe when I told you guys I was over my ex?”

The room went silent.

The screen froze for 3 seconds.

Beep... beep...

> ANSWER ACCEPTED
Next Player: Varun

We exhaled at once like we had been underwater.

Varun ran both hands through his messy wet hair. “Okay. Sh*t. Um…”

“First lie,” I prompted softly.

He didn’t speak for 20 seconds. Then:
“When Sid said he was scared of heights, I told him I wasn’t scared of anything to make him feel safe. But I was. I was f*cking terrified.”

Again, the screen paused.

Then:

> ANSWER ACCEPTED
Next Player: Karan

Karan’s jaw tightened. His shoulders squared.

“I lied about hating you,” he said suddenly, looking directly at me.

“What?” I blinked.

“That day in the field... you teased me, and I said I hated you. But I didn’t. I never did. I just… didn’t want you to know how badly I liked you.”

My heart paused. But the screen didn’t.

> ANSWER ACCEPTED
Final Player: Monami
Time to answer: 01:00

My stomach flipped.

Everyone turned to me.

I felt like throwing up.

First lie.

So many.

But only one was first.

“I told Sid I was fine... after my mom died,” I said, breath hitching. “He kept checking on me. He cried more than I did. And I told him I was okay. But I wasn’t. I was broken.”

The room waited.

Beep...

> ANSWER ACCEPTED

A door creaked open.

And then another screen flickered to life.

> Bonus Round: LIE DETECTED. ONE PLAYER LIED. CONSEQUENCE: INITIATED.

“Wait—WHAT?” Koel screamed.

“WE ALL TOLD THE TRUTH,” Varun shouted.

“No,” I said quietly. “Someone... didn’t.”

All eyes turned.

And then—

The floor beneath Koel gave out.

She screamed.

We all lunged forward—but too late.

She fell.
Vanished.

Gone.

“KOOOOOELLLLLLLL!!!”

The door slammed shut again.

The screen was now black.

Until it lit up once more:

> 3 Survivors Remain.
Next Task Begins In: 00:05:00
