Title: Lake Water and Truths
The sun was dipping low over Camp Half-Blood, casting golden ripples across the surface of the lake. You sat on the dock, bare feet dangling over the edge, absently skimming the water with your toes. The soft sound of footsteps behind you was enough to tell you who it was.
“Mind if I join?” Percy’s voice was casual, but there was something uncertain in it.
“Of course not,” you said, scooting over.
He sat beside you, close but not too close, the way he always did when he was nervous. For a while, neither of you spoke. The lake lapped softly against the wood, and a cool breeze tugged at your shirt.
“I, uh... I’ve been meaning to say something,” Percy started, running a hand through his dark hair. “And I keep chickening out. Which is stupid, because I’ve fought monsters and Titans and... gods.”
You raised a brow, heart thudding. “But talking to me is scarier?”
He gave a breathy laugh. “Yeah. Kinda.”
There was a beat of silence before he turned to you fully. “I like you. Not just in the ‘you’re cool to hang out with’ kind of way. I mean—I think about you when I’m supposed to be training. Or, like, breathing.”
You blinked. “That’s... a lot of thinking.”
“I know,” he muttered, looking away. “But if you don’t feel the same, that’s totally fine. I just—I needed to say it.”
You looked at him, really looked. The sun made his eyes look more sea-glass than storm. Brave in battle, but shy in love.
You nudged his shoulder with yours. “Good thing I like you too, Seaweed Brain.”
His head whipped toward you, eyes wide. “Wait—really?”
You smiled. “Yeah. Really.”
His grin bloomed slowly, like the sun breaking through mist.
Percy looked like you’d just told him he won the Capture the Flag game and got out of cleaning the stables.
“You like me too?” he asked again, dumbfounded.
You laughed. “You want it in writing?”
He grinned, then rubbed the back of his neck. “No, I mean—yeah. I just didn’t think someone like you would…”
“Would what?” you teased.
He gave you a sheepish smile. “Would like a guy who smells faintly of salt water and makes terrible jokes.”
You leaned in slightly, just enough for your shoulder to brush his again. “Turns out, I kind of like the smell of salt water.”
Percy’s breath caught. His eyes flicked to your lips, then back to your eyes, like he was silently asking permission.
You didn’t say anything. You just closed the space between you.
The kiss was gentle—nervous, even—but warm. Percy’s hand found yours on the dock, his thumb brushing over your knuckles like he was grounding himself. His lips were soft, hesitant but real, like he’d imagined this a hundred times and still couldn’t believe it was happening.
You broke apart just a little, but didn’t move far.
He blinked. “Wow.”
You smiled. “Yeah?”
“Yeah.” He was still holding your hand, still looking at you like you’d just saved the world. “I might have to fight Ares again just to get this lucky twice.”
You rolled your eyes. “Please don’t.”
He chuckled, leaning his head on your shoulder. The lake shimmered beside you, the only witness to your moment—well, unless a certain Hermes kid had snuck a camera spell into the bushes again.
“I should’ve told you sooner,” he murmured.
“I’m glad you didn’t,” you replied. “It wouldn’t have been by the lake. And I wouldn’t have kissed you first.”
Percy looked up at you with that wide, goofy smile of his. “Best. Day. Ever.”
