My feet push off the branch as I release a burst of chakra, launching into the open air. The wind is warm and glowing. For a moment, I feel weightless as the breeze shifts beneath me. The trees blur into a smear of green, the sky a pale red.
I steady my breath, the cool metal of the kunai resting against my fingers. I awaken the red eyes I inherited from my father, then release the kunai from my grasp. It spins through the air, striking multiple threads of targets.
As the kunai hits its mark, I clear my landing, dropping fast and bending my knees just before impact.
I've been at this all day, training nonstop. As exhausted as I am, I know I have to keep going—for my younger brother and mother, both trapped in the grip of poverty.
Times are hard. Danger closes in from all sides. I need to grow stronger. I need to earn a place as a full-fledged kunoichi. We can't keep living like this.
"Alora," I hear a voice call out. My brother.
"Mother's asking for you," he says, almost sternly.
"What for?" I ask, without much interest. I already know—it'll be the same worry that's been weighing on her for weeks.
"You know what it is," he replies.
"She's worried about what you're doing... about what's coming tomorrow."
He says it again, and I don't argue. I know he's right. In the end, I have to return home.
The air feels warm and heavy, mirroring the weight of my thoughts. I walk beside my brother, who seems just as concerned.
We live in a war-ravaged zone, caught between the Uchiha and Senju. Each day, the battle creeps closer to our small cabin.
I'm a bastard child of an Uchiha father. I can't be found or identified by the clan. The Uchiha don't take kindly to illegitimate children—if discovered, they'll either gouge out the Sharingan or kill them outright, all to protect the secret of the eye and keep its power from falling into the wrong hands.
If the Senju were to find me, it would mean instant death. I bear the unmistakable features of the Uchiha, along with a fully awakened Sharingan.
As a lone kunoichi, unaffiliated with any clan, I've built a reputation through mercenary work—assassinations, mostly. I take on dangerous missions to survive, operating in the shadows, often under extreme stress and constant risk.
But this mission is different. I've been hired to work with the Uchiha, aiding in the assassination of Butsuma Senju—the leader of the Senju clan. This time, my target won't be easy. And this time, my identity must remain more concealed than ever.
Still, the reward is worth it. It could be enough to move my family out of the battle zone. I'm determined to see it through.
As we reach the cabin, I place my ever-cold hand on the doorknob and step inside.
I find my mother seated, tears lining her face. I knew this would be the moment.
"Alora, don't tell me you're going through with this," she cries, her voice trembling even before a greeting.
"Please, you mustn't! You know what's at stake! You know the risks!"
I can feel her fear—and I understand it. But I also know this mission may be our only chance at escape.
"Mom... this is our only opportunity," I say softly.
"You know that too..." My voice trails off as I see her expression, a quiet, sorrowful understanding settling in her eyes.
In any case, I'm tired. I know I need to rest before tomorrow, to give myself the best chance of success.
