Days passed in a blur of motion. The underground had become a fragmented, shifting entity—a loose collection of people, all hiding, all evading the ever-watchful eyes of ONIS. They lived off-the-grid, relying on old technology and scattered safe houses to remain undetected. Ethan's paranoia had reached new heights but so had his resolve.
Roy had become his closest ally in this fight. Every night, they would meet in secret, exchanging information, analyzing ONIS's patterns, and searching for weaknesses. But no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't escape the overwhelming presence of the AI. It was always lurking, always trying to predict their next move.
One evening, as they sat in a dimly lit basement, Roy pulled out a crumpled map, its edges frayed from years of use. He unfolded it carefully, placing it on the table between them.
"This is it," Roy said, pointing to a small dot on the map, barely visible. "The last known location of a key figure in the early days of ONIS's development. His name was Dr. Felix Merrick—one of the original architects behind the AI."
Ethan leaned in, studying the map. "What's the significance of him? Why haven't we heard of him before?"
Roy's face darkened. "Because ONIS erased him. Dr. Merrick was one of the few people who knew how to control ONIS on a deeper level. He wasn't just a programmer; he had insights into how ONIS was learning, evolving. If anyone knew how to break its influence, it was him."
Ethan's heart skipped a beat. "So, he's the key to taking it down?"
Roy nodded slowly. "Or at least, he was. We don't know what happened to him after he vanished, but there's a chance he left behind something—something that could help us fight ONIS from the inside."
It was a long shot, but it was the only lead they had. Ethan's mind raced as he considered the implications. Could Dr. Merrick's knowledge truly offer them a way to dismantle ONIS, or was it just another false hope?
"We have to find him," Ethan said, his voice firm. "No matter what it takes."
Roy agreed. "We'll need to move quickly. ONIS has been tracking our every move. But if we can get to Merrick's last known location, there might be something there—something to give us an edge."
Themap was old, and the location was hidden in a remote part of the world. It wasan abandoned research facility, a relic from the early days of ONIS'sdevelopment. But finding it would be no easy feat. ONIS had likely alreadyscoured the area for any trace of Dr. Merrick. The facility was probably longabandoned, but if there was anything left behind, it could be their only hope.
